Chapter Four

An eclipse is coming.

I grabbed my pen and started scribbling the different scenes running through my head on my journal. I am currently plotting the first few chapters of the novella for my Creative Writing class.

“So this scene will  serve as the transition between the two chapters. And it also serves as a perfect cliffhanger.”

I love talking to myself when I am writing and I do it all the time. I sometimes recite the dialogues between two characters aloud to get a feel of the emotions and flow of their conversation.

“I think this would work too…for now.”

I am now looking at the unfinished outline that I have written so far and I think it covers much of the story's beginning events without compromising the next scenes if ever I change something while writing.

I actually like how this outline is turning out.

And slowly, this universe is starting to make sense to me.

While I was looking at my outline, I felt the vibration of my phone placed just above my special journal.

I picked up my phone.

TheGreatEthanJames: if you are unable to dance the cancan, does that mean you cantcant?

Ethan’s online humor is actually really weird. I just shook my head at his top-tier dad joke.

It did make me smile, though. Not going to lie.

BeatsByDrei: And do you know that three Heliums make up the laughing gas? He He He

TheGreatEthanJames: Good one, Drei!

Most of our online and text messages are just us sharing really bad puns with each other. And honestly, I like it like that. It's fun and happy.

TheGreatEthanJames: Wait, wait, I have a good one, Drei. What is Humpty Dumpty's favourite season?

BeatsByDrei: Okay. What?

TheGreatEthanJames: Autumn. He had a great fall!

Sometimes, I question Ethan’s online humor. But most of the time, I just find myself smiling or laughing despite how colossally awful it is.

BeatsByDrei: That one was actually decent, Ethan.

TheGreatEthanJames: Decent my ass, Drei. That one was hilarious!

I can actually imagine him over at his place right now. He's probably smiling, too. Or laughing, even.

BeatsByDrei: I'll give it a tres.

TheGreatEthanJames: You're going to be such a harsh professor if you decide to become one. Terror teacher Drei.

After I read that, I actually laughed. Like genuinely laughed because Ethan said something funny.

BeatsByDrei: I grade based on merits, Ethan.

TheGreatEthanJames: Sure you do!

I just shook my head again. Ethan is indeed a huge mystery.

We continued bombarding each other with awful yet somewhat decent puns. And I was laughing that afternoon. Maybe Ethan was laughing, too.

Laughing, I guess, in a way, became our escape.

TheGreatEthanJames: I had a puntastic time with you, Drei. But I must attend to my unfinished requirements. Talk to you when I decide to procrastinate again.
