The story begins as a flashback when Emily is riding her bicycle, until she accidentally hits a rock and falls over. While the neighborhood kids make fun of her, a new neighborhood girl walks up to them, and she steps by Emily's side, scolding them. After helping Emily up, the girl introduces herself as Lauren. Despite her cold-like nature, Emily felt she could trust her, and the two almost instantly became close friends. Since they were neighbors, the two would walk with their parents to kindergarten together and they were left inseparable.
Flash forward to sophomore year in high school, Lauren and Emily are in the same homeroom together, and Emily learns that Lauren is into girls. She still accepts her, and as the year progresses, they become good friends with Robert, a nerdy boy who seems to be an outcast among others. He explains that the high school is run by Brittany and her two best friends, Melanie and Sarah. In the process, Emily develops a crush on David, unaware that he is actually Brittany's boyfriend. She turns to Lauren and Robert for help, and Robert agrees to give her tips, but to also be careful. On the other hand, Lauren didn't like it....
