{ HOW IT STARTED }
They say "Don't judge a book by its cover", but we all know too well how often we judge things at first impressions.
For me, a book cover is one of the ways that arouses our attention to open the book. I have lost count of each and every time I marveled at the sight of a huge array of books - simply, by its cover.
However, despite the shiny gold wrapper, theses questions still follow: "Does it hold relevance to the story?", "Was the design clear enough to be understood?", "Was the style consistent with the overall tone and mood of the story?", and "Does it give an identity to the story?"
It's easy to look at covers and judge them, but, turns out, it's hard to make a single one.
TBH, I've made dozens of cover designs that end up as failures (it goes to show just because you went to an art school, doesn't guarantee that you'd be good at it), but I still chose to continue and learn.
That was two years ago.
Chip Kidd, one of my most favorite book designers in the entire world, doesn't judge book by their covers. He creates covers that embodies the story inside the book with clarity and mystery.
Not to mention, a whole lot of play.
I like to think that I can follow and act on that concept.
Creating my own covers and different graphic have been such a joy.
The process, though sometimes fickle and strenuous, was my favorite part. I love discovering and experimenting with different styles and techniques. The product was just the icing on the top.
Participating in The Library's Graphic Contest and with the encouragement from my fellow Wattpad writers, made me want to challenge myself more and delve back into the field of design.
I want to give every writer the opportunity to have a cover (and other graphics) that would suit and embody the stories they tell, and catch the eye of their future readers.
I also hope to impart some knowledge and inspiration to any aspiring graphic designers in Wattpad to develop their skills and elevate their aesthetic sense of self.
