Escape The Dead
Chapter 4- Bonding & Facing Reality
Gina picked up her pace in running. She had yet to run into anything on the second floor, but whoever else was up here wasn't so lucky. Her eyes went wide as she slid her way around the half broken barricades. That was never a good sign. She knew better than to trust static defense, a human's main advantage over zombies was mobility. There were signs of a bloody struggle all over the floors and Gina stepped cautiously to avoid getting any more of the disgusting mess on her sneakers. She took a deep gulp, slowing the distances between her steps. The enemy known, is better than the enemy hidden.
"Jill!?" Gina called into the quiet air. Her voice echoed in the large, empty halls. She bit her lip at the lack of response. Each of her steps echoed, and her eyes glanced down to find bloody footprints heading further into the hall.
"Jill?" Gina called again.
In the distance Gina heard a soft thud. She took a deep breath, but found the stench of death too stifling. Gina gripped on her spear like stick and continued. She peeked into the large room that housed the elevator. "Hello? If there are any zombies, please moan so I know where you are."
"Would you be quiet?"
Gina nearly leaped out of her clothes. She wheeled her stick around, ready to defend herself, when she found the person she was looking for. Jillian was standing not three feet away, leaning against a vending machine with a can of juice in hand. She pulled a dollar from the pocket in her jeans and bought another can. Jillian held it out and Gina took it.
"So, what happened?" Gina asked, opening her can of orange Fanta.
Jillian pointed down at six zombies scattered around the room and took a sip of sprite from her can.
"You did all that with a frying pan?," Gina said amused.
Jillian nodded, "This pan can be pretty useful." She then looked at Gina with a sad face. "How could you leave me like that?" She whined.
Gina shook her head. "Ah... um... I'm sorry?"
"Sorry isn't enough," said Jillian.
"Jill, look, I already apologized, so-" Gina began but was cut off.
"No! Promise me that you won't ever abandon me like that again," said Jillian.
Gina took some time to think. Being with her wasn't fun but Jillian felt like a younger sister to her, like a bratty sister she never had, or this is just the feeling of pity, but nevertheless, Jillian was her friend. She place her hand on Jillian's head. "Alright, I'm sorry. I'll promise to never leave your side ever again."
Jillian gave Gina a soft smile and took a sip from her can.
"But if your going to be dead weight, I'm leaving you," Gina added.
"Gina!" Jillian glared.
"Sorry, I'm just kidding, just kidding," Gina chuckled.
Gina chugged down the rest of her orange Fanta when the suddenly heard the sound of the elevators cables grinding. They both stared at the elevator they saw the indicator above the elevator doors.
"Do you think someone else is here?" Gina asked.
"I didn't see anyone that's alive when I made my way to the elevators," said Jillian.
Gina gulped when the elevator stopped on the second floor. "You don't think..."
"T-There's no way..."
