Arabella's POV"Ari! Wait for me!" Yaz shouts. I feel the cool, green grass on my bare feet. My dress is a light cream, with little flowers on it. I turn around to see Yazmin run up the hill. We are in the castle grounds, and you can see the castle on the horizon.
"You're so slow!" I exclaim.
"I don't want to ruin my dress!" She says as she runs to my side.
"Your dress is green, you'll be fine," I roll my eyes. "I'll race you to the top of that tree!" I point to an oak tree about 100 yards away.
"I can't climb a tree!" She protests.
"Now's a great time to learn," I take off sprinting to the tree. After a few seconds, I see Yaz start running. I laugh over my shoulder.
"Wait up!" She shouts.
"I can't, we're racing!"
Then I trip over a rock. The dirt goes all in my mouth and nose. I hear a laugh behind me. I look up and see Yaz pass me and start climbing the tree. "Ugh," I groan.
"You're so slow!" She shouts, mocking me. I get back up on my feet and run to the tree. She laughs as I reach for the first branch to start climbing. When I reach the top, she asks, "What took you so long?" I glare at her and roll my eyes.
We talk for a while. "Here, take one of these," I hold out a box of truffles. They're a little squished from my fall, but we don't care.
"Where did you get these?" She asks.
"The kitchen"
"You stole them?"
"Well, the were for my birthday celebration, so is it really stealing? They were going to get eaten anyway," I say. Today is my 12th birthday. My brother let me choose the flavor of the dessert so, naturally, I chose chocolate. Chocolate is my favorite thing ever.
"Good point," Yaz says as she grabs a truffle. We forget all the rules our mothers taught us about grace and stuff the truffle in our faces. The chocolate is smeared all over our faces.
"Thanks for coming to my celebration. I know your family is busy in Rothsburn"
"Ari, you're my best friend. Of course I came"
"Let's make a promise," I say as I hold out my pinky.
"What for?" She asks.
"To stick by each other's side, and put each other first in every choice we make"
"I promise," she says, interlocking her pinky with mine.
"I promise," I reply. We smile at each other. Right now, we are the only people in the world. Just me, Yaz, and our tree. Then a voice interrupts our world.
"Yazmin, Arabella, come back inside!" Sylvia calls. Sylvia is Horatio's wife, Yazmin's aunt, and the closest thing I have to a mother.
"You have intruded on our land. Prepare to be punished!" Yaz shouts.
"Who is punishing me?" Sylvia asks, playing along.
"The Empresses Arabella and Yazmin!" I exclaim.
"Would the empresses like to get ready for the party?" She asks us. We glance at each other.
"Yes!" We both shout and rush down the tree, giggling.
"My goodness girls, what did you do to your faces?" She exclaims.
