Garley slept very well that night. He was a little less worried now that they at least knew where to start their search for the portal.
"Where are your parents?" Garley asked Jorge.
They had been walking along a wide street. Jorge was going to pick up Alix, who was at her archery class, and Garley accompanied him to get to know the town better. It was very cold. Garley was wearing a coat that Jorge had lent him, along with a pair of warm socks.
"They have gone to Carmaleon—a town in the Lugans," he replied sadly. "They went to work on a new government project, which I know nothing about."
"I see."
"They will stay there for four weeks, tops."
They crossed a busy street which had a large gallery on one side, mostly selling accessories for men. There was a very large black hat spinning from the top of a store, from which many gears were exposed, grinding and making a deafening sound. It was shining with LED lights.
"I have to admit that the stores here are not even a bit normal," Garley laughed, wide-eyed. "I can't tell anymore what's magic or what's high tech. Maybe it's both."
As they walked, the scenery got stranger and stranger. Garley was impressed, and stopped in front of one place whose facade had a giant wardrobe carved, with doors that were constantly opening and closing, making a banging sound. As the doors opened and closed, men and women's garments of various shapes and colors were exposed in holographic images. A holographic dress was designed next to them, and fit Jorge.
"They need to improve this little smart technology," said Jorge.
It was a beautiful synchronization of movements, like a fashion show.
"So, how many towns are there in the Kansnubra Island?" asked Garley, raising his brows.
When he first arrived, he thought that the island was only formed by Carolinda and maybe some distant and hidden villages.
"How could you not know this?" asked Jorge.
"I'm not from here, remember?"
"Oh, sure. I almost forgot," Jorge said, laughing. "There are five large cities and a few smaller towns. Carolinda, where we are, is a city of the Pelvins."
"Pelvins?"
"Yes. There are three different groups of people on the island. The descendants from foreigners, who came from the outside world dozens of years ago. The Pelvins, who are a magical people. And the Lugans who are also magical, but a little different. They are a little limited."
"You said the Pelvins and the Lugans are magical people?"
"Yes. You still have much to learn about us."
"Go on, please."
"The Pelvins are natural inhabitants of Carolinda and the surrounding towns. As for the Lugans, they descend from the Carmaleon and their younger sisters."
"Okay. Explain to me a little more about that difference," Garley requested.
Jorge pulled Garley into an alley, in a narrow street.
"Pay attention," he said seriously, as he drew his sword.
For a moment, Garley was concerned, not understanding Jorge's actions. Was he trying to intimidate him?
Jorge lifted his sword and it was enveloped by blue glow with flames running along the surface of the blade. He gave a crooked smile.
"Woah!" exclaimed Garley in excitement. "I didn't know you could do this!"
