Prologue : A Rude Awakening

Of course when we're growing up, our parents, our teachers, our families, they all tell us stories filled with magic and monsters.  Knights in shining armor saving cities from fierce dragons, a young priestess saving a city from the wrath of an evil demon, or even, a family trying to break the curse of an evil witch.

Though of course, as soon as we take a minute to question these stories, we're told that we shouldn't believe in such things. That, we'll never come across them no matter how hard we try simply because they aren't out there waiting to be found. Even still, they continue to tell these stories, spread these tales filled with warnings and words on how to confront the things that lurk just out of sight.

Of course I was one of those so-called daydreamers who wasn't afraid to believe those stories were all true even if everyone thought I was absolutely insane, or had way too wild of an imagination. I simply wasn't meant to accept it; the fact that all of these things didn't exist. Believing that they didn't, just left way too much of a hole, something... that was left to be desired that nothing in our everyday lives could fill the place of. I always just told myself that maybe, just maybe it was because of the fact that we were told to believe that they didn't exist, they... they stopped believing that we existed. That we as humans, and they as beings of magic, had gone on living two completely separate lives simply because we wanted nothing to do with the other.

I can't help but shake the feeling though, that it was because I believed in all that hocus pocus that I ended up getting thrown into all of this, dragging my best friend along for the ride. It had to be the biggest slap in the face that I'd ever received in my life, and go figure that it was probably because I spent every night waiting to come across everything that I hoped was real. If you ask some people, it wasn't my belief in the unknown, but rather a divine force that has just been waiting for the right moment.

Either way, all I can really say is that it's one hell of a mess and; without a doubt the rudest awakening you could imagine.

"Hey Uzi, you hear that sound?" The question had come from my best friend, a girl who normally sported two pigtails that looked like they were made of spun gold. Milly was her name, not to be rude but, the name was as simple as she was. Honestly, she's simple in the best of ways.

My eyes moved from the television to glance over at her only to close as I tried to focus on the sounds around us. It was easy enough to block out the usual things.. The TV itself, the typical moans and groans a house made... It just made picking out the sound even easier. "A siren? It isn't in our area, but that's definitely a siren."

"It isn't the police, an ambulance or a fire truck either... it's something else... That's the-" I didn't mean to interrupt her. I just so happened to be thinking out loud.

"The emergency siren."

It's one of those sounds you're trained to know, even if while they're telling you about it, they're busy swearing up and down that you'll never actually hear it to need to worry about it. They're just taking precautionary steps. Yeah, just like those stories. Thanks guys.

It didn't take me long to rush over to the window, pushing it open and instantly letting the sound grow louder without the sheet of glass muffling the sound. "Definitely not our area.. It'd be way louder if it was. But why, it doesn't make any sense, everything seems like it's the same as always.. so..."

"The news." Milly grabbed the remote, changing the channel and drawing my attention to the screen behind me. The only thing that was unusual was a red bar that sat at the top of the screen letting everyone know that there was an evacuation order for the southern district of the city; aside from that everything was the same. The typical traffic reports and the weather. "What's going on... they aren't giving any details, other than the evacuation, that doesn't make any sense.. No details, no footage... No coverage at all..." Milly's voice was soft, slightly muffled as she spoke. Her confusion was obvious.
