Riley's POV
"Oh my gosh, grandma!" I say excitedly.
"Oh my gosh what?" She mocks me, over dramatically flopping her hands in the process.
I roll my eyes. "So you know that guy Jack?"
"The one ignoring you?"
"Yes, but he's not anymore," I tell her. "We made up a few wee-"
"Wait, wait, wait. Hold on a minute," she intervenes, waving her hands in my face. "Did you make up or make out ?"
"Grandma!" I scold.
"Well did you?"
I sigh. "We kissed, but that's it!"
She lightly laughs, followed by a horrific couch. I look at her with sad eyes. She's been fighting this war since I was fifteen, almost sixteen. She's lost the remainder of her hair; the only thing remotely close to her hair is the purple wig on her desk I got for her birthday a few months ago. Her skin got paler--she's almost a ghost. Her teeth have rotted away, so the doctors gave her artificial teeth. She still smiles, even though she doesn't like them. They look too perfect, and unrealistic, she told me once. She still smiles.
My back pocket vibrates against the cushioned chair framed with wooden features, and I take my phone from the denim fabric.
It was a text from Lilly, saying to go over her house tonight. I respond with an ok.
"Hey grandma, I gotta go. I'll be back maybe Monday?" I inform her. I always tell her when I'll be here and when I won't.
"Alright, deary. Just be safe." She smiles as I stand up from sitting in the chair.
"By grandma love you," I say. I walk to the door and twist the knob.
"Love you too, Riles, she says. "And don't forget to use protection!" She calls as I close the door.
"Grandma!"

"Hey honey, how was school?" My mom's sugar-sweet voice says.
"Good, great, dandy." I throw her some adjectives as I climb the steps and up to my room. I grab some clothes for Lilly's and toss it in a string bag that I got at a Pierce the Viel concert. I also got a t-shirt, but it's somewhere in my dresser.
I run down the stairs, telling my mom I'll be at Lilly's. I go to my car and drive to her house, which isn't a very long drive.

I laugh at the story Lilly told me about how she went to walmart at three in the morning with her friend Amanda and got thrown out for 'being a disburance to other customers'.
"No, but it's like, we were the only people there, except for some people looking at fishing poles, but still!" She laughs with me and takes a pizza roll from the plate we just made. "So, what's up with you?"
"What do yo mean? Nothing's really happening-"
"No, I mean with you and Jack." She interrupts me. Damn, that's the second time today. What a record.
"Um, not much?" I said as if it were a question, and not a definate answer.
"Oh, really? Then why did you run after him yesterday when he ran out of the cafeteria? What are you not telling me?" She looks at me with sad, pleading eyes, just begging for an explanation.
Should I tell her? I can't lie to her, she would find out soon enough. I sigh. "We're just...getting to know each other." I smile.
"You kissed him, didn't you?" She deadpands.
I quietly sigh. "Yeah."
"Riley!"
"What!"
She rakes her fingers through her dirty blond hair. "I don't know, there's just something about him..."
"What do you mean?" I shift on her bed and reach for a pizza roll.
She searches for something to say, and I mentally build an army for what she may say. "Never mind," she says. That's not at all what I expected.
"No, just tell me," I press forward.
"I just," she begins again. "I just wouldn't get too close to him, y'know? Like, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to pour your heart out to."
I scrunch my eye brows together. "What? Are you saying that I shouldn't trust him?"
"No-"
"Yes, you are, Lilly." I let my hands fall to my side, knowing that this will end with an argument. "You know what? Forget about it."
I take my phone from my pocket, and get a message.
