"Papa. I'm home from school." Emma said as she entered the front door of the large house.
"Welcome home little bug, how was your day?" Adrien asked his daughter. Emma was nine years old now.
"It was fine I guess." She looked down, knowing she wasn't completely telling the truth. Luckily, Adrien was very good at reading his daughter.
"Now we both know that isn't the truth, what happened?" She had been so happy earlier this morning. She was excited because it was a Friday, which meant she had a whole weekend without school work.
"Well, the kids in my class were talking about what they were doing with their mothers for Mother's Day, and, well I didn't know what to say. We won't get to do anything with Maman for Mother's Day." Emma looked at her shoes sadly, tears threatening to pour over.
Adrien was unsure of what to say, he hadn't realized that it was nearly Mother's Day. It had been almost a year since they had defeated Adrien's father, in the process though, Marinette had gotten hurt. She exerted herself too much during the battle and died from blood loss and exhaustion. The whole of Paris had mourned Ladybug and Marinette for weeks. This would be the first Mother's day without her here.
Still not knowing what to say, Adrien took a couple steps forward and grabbed his daughter, bending at his knees to be at the same level as her. He pulled her into an embrace and silently sobbed. It was so hard for him to stay strong for Emma, he'd lost the love of his life only just a year ago. Emma cried along with her father, and they stayed that way for some time, grasped in each other's arms. When they had both calmed down, Adrien pulled away holding her at an arm's length.
"You know what, we may not be able to see her on Sunday, but we can go talk to her and bring her flowers. I'm sure your mother's been lonely, we haven't gone to her in a few weeks. How about you write her a letter too, she'd like that." It hurt him to say the words, he never liked to go to the graveyard. Going there just reminded him of all he had lost that day, but he also loved to go there and talk to her, it was somewhat calming.
"Okay Papa," Emma said with a sniffle. "I will. Are you going to write her a letter too?"
"I think I will, she used to love it when I left her notes." Adrien said with a soft smile remembering her reaction to the note he left her, her smile could clear any cloudy day.
On Sunday Emma and Adrien went to the graveyard. They walked hand in hand to Marinette, each holding flowers and a letter. Marinette's grave was easy to find, because many admirers of hers came often to leave flowers, candles, and other miscellaneous things. It made Adrien so happy to know that even in death Ladybug still made an impact on people.
"Look," Emma said pointing, "it's Aunt Alya and Uncle Nino." She said happily.
"We figured we'd find you guys here today." Alya said sweetly, walking up to Adrien to give him a tight hug. It was nothing like a hug from Marinette, but he loved Alya's hugs.
"Hey, we had to come, it's Mother's Day. Even if she isn't here anymore, she's still a mother. What about you guys though, aren't you going to visit your parents today? Won't your mothers be upset?"
"Well, my parents are on a trip for a few months, and we visited Nino's parents already. We knew you'd need people here for you today." Alya was always so caring, Adrien loved having her around.
Emma had gone off and was talking to Nino, leaving Adrien and Alya to talk.
"She'll be happy you came. I know her fans and admirers come all the time, but I bet she's been lonely without you. She has a lot of letters over there, you should take them with you, they're as much for you as they are for her." They walked over to the headstone, reading it always made things more real for Adrien.
Marinette Agreste, Ladybug. Beloved wife, mother, friend, and superhero.
'Let me make this promise to you. No matter who wants to harm you, Ladybug and Chat Noir will do everything in our power to keep you safe.'
-Ladybug
He remembered her saying that, it was in that moment that he knew he'd love her no matter what. Adrien leaned down, kissing the palm of his hand and placing it on the headstone. He sat down on the ground and looked around at all the Ladybug things laying around. It made him so happy to know that they still loved her, she died to save everyone, and that was one of the biggest sacrifices ever.
"Hey M'lady, Emma and I are here. We didn't want you to be alone on Mother's Day. It's been too long since I last came, I'm sorry about that love. Alya and Nino came too." Adrien said looking over his shoulders, tears slowly rolling down his face. Emma saw this and went to snuggle up and sit by her father. "It's the whole gang back together again, huh? I promise, next time, I won't wait so long." He couldn't bare to say much more, he set the flowers and letter down and looked at Emma.
After them talking, crying, and laughing together for a while, they decided to take their leave.
The other three had already started walking, while Adrien stayed behind.
"I'll come back next week princess, I promise." Adrien said, softly crying.
As he was about to walk away he could swear he felt as if Marinette was hugging him. When asked later, he said he could hear her saying I love you, quietly in his ear.
"I love you too. Happy Mother's Day, princess."
