Aaron's POV:
I laid on my bed staring at the ceiling. "I have to protect them..." I whispered. It's been a few months since mother got custody over us. She had become more abusive. She threw stuff at us, slapped us, kicked us, punched us, and would even throw Melissa across the room. I felt a tear rolling down my cheeks as I saw an image of my youngest sister being chucked like a rag doll. I heard screaming coming from downstairs.

"MELISSA! I TOLD YOU TO GO GET ME A BEER! I DIDN'T SAY WATER DID I?!?!?" I heard my mother's voice followed by a slap and a yelp. I ran downstairs. I was sixteen, and Melissa was ten. I had to protect her.

"Mother stop this! She is ten! Don't you even care about us?!?" I made sure I spoke loud and clear for her drunken ass to hear me.

"I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOU DAMN KIDS!!!!" She yelled and threw a punch at me. I had taken a couple of years of martial arts. I dodged and grabbed her wrists and pinned them behind her back. I pushed her to the floor and looked at Melissa and nodded in the direction of Skyla's room. We were all used to having to run away for a few hours or even days until mom forgot about the situation. My knee was in my mother's back and I bolted out of the house and jumped into my car, Skyla and Melissa were already in. Skyla had cranked it for me and we left. We each had bags of food and clothes and a case of water bottles was always in my trunk.

I drove out of the neighborhood and to the abandoned house in the woods just a few miles away from our house. No one had lived there for years. We fixed it up a while ago and furnished it. Dad had taught me how to build tables and beds and more furniture. All we had for mattresses were pieces of memory foam. We had brought a few blankets there too. There were thicker blankets in the closet for colder seasons. We had a mini fridge and a freezer that was a chest. We had everything we needed, even electricity and running water. I had paid the bills on this place thanks to the job I have.

I work as a body guard for some rich company. My coworkers know my situation and got my boss to give me a raise. I was paid $200 an hour. I worked at least 6-8 hours a day. So I got good pay. The house was small enough and we didn't have to use it often so the bills didn't cost much. We couldn't move in here completely because I didn't make enough to pay bills when they were raised. If they were higher, I wouldn't be able to pay them. I tucked Melissa in and Skyla and I sat in the living room.

"I'm glad you found this house when you did. We needed it. Yeah it's small, living room, kitchen, bathroom, and one bedroom, but it's amazing that we can come here." Skyla looked at me and smiled, then her smile faded, "Why can't we call Child Services on mother?"

"We can't call Child Services because we might get separated," I sighed, "And I need to protect you guys." I looked her in the eye and she launched herself at me into a hug.

I playfully knocked her to the floor and we started play wrestling. She never knew this, but the reason I'd play fight with her and Melissa was to teach them some real life fighting moves. They copied my movements, but used more force than I did since I was stronger than them two combined. Eventually I had her pinned, she admitted that I won and we laid on the floor laughing and panting.

"Ya'know, our lives suck all together, but at least we have each other, that's all we need." Skyla punched me lightly in the arm after we sat up.

"Yeah, I love you guys, I couldn't bare to lose y'all. I need y'all-" I stopped.

"And we love and need you Aaron. You have protected us so much and we owe our lives to you." She smiled warmly at me.

"We should get some sleep." I stood up and extended my hand to help her up. She took my hand, stood up, and we headed to our room. Melissa was out like a light. "She is always so peaceful when she sleeps." I whispered.

"Yeah, she sleeps a lot now, it's her escape from mother." Skyla was already laying down and covered up. I laid down and drifted off to sleep.

I woke up the next morning and checked my phone. I had gotten a text from mother.

(M= Mother A= Aaron)

M- Come home now!

A- Only of you promise not to hurt us when we do.

M- Fine. Y'all can go to your rooms and I'll leave your worthless asses alone for the day.

A- good, headed there in a few, I'm stopping by the store.

M- Still have money?

A- Uh huh, found it on the street.

M- K. Just get your dumb asses home soon.

A- Yeah, yeah, whatever 🙄

Mother didn't know I had a job so whenever I went to the store I'd usually get money from her and use it to buy her beer and candy for my little sisters. This time I had to make up a quick excuse. She didn't even know where we were and couldn't track us through our phones. I went over to my sisters' beds.

"Girls, wake up." Their beds were close enough together that I could shake them both at the same time.

Melissa groaned, "Have to go back?"

"Yeah, unfortunately." I answered.

"I don't wanna go back to that old hag," Skyla rolled her eyes and got out of bed. We got dressed in different clothes and got in the car. We went to the store and I let Melissa and Skyla pick a few snacks, candy and get a case of their favorite kind of soda. I got some stuff too. I grabbed a case of mother's favorite type of beer and some red wine. I had a fake ID so that I could get it. The picture was me. I made sure to grow a small beard. Not much, it just made me look a little older. We got ours and mother's stuff and headed to the house.

"Girls, hide your snacks, take mine too and put them through Skyla's window so mother won't see them." They both nodded to me after I finished speaking. Skyla opened her window and placed the snacks on her bed and covered them with a blanket and we went through the door to get inside.

"Finally y'all are back. What took y'all so fucking long hm?" Mother shot all of us a glare.

I glared at her back, "I got your beer and wine. I know what you like because you force me to get it all the damn time." I didn't mean to cuss.

"You're really going to swear at me? Wow, you better go to your room before you get punched." She shouted.

"Whatever." I growled. I started to walk to my room and I heard a crash on the wall, over my head, I pushed Melissa and Skyla in front of me. Mother had thrown a plate at us. It was about to break on top of my sisters. I felt the pieces hitting my head and shoulders. Some dug into my shoulders. I had my eyes shut tight so that no shards got into my eyes.

I took off my shirt and we continued to Skyla's room. She grabbed her snacks and hid them in a compartment in her wall. I had made one in each room for the three of us. We hid our special belongings there such as snacks and money. I was saving up for a gun license so that I could go hunting more often. I already went but I used my bow and arrows. I hugged my sisters and headed to my room. I grabbed my knife out of the compartment in my wall and started make arrows out of sticks, arrowhead shaped rocks and pieces of plastic. I sighed and wondered when the next time I'd hunt was. I was really good at cooking so I'd always make a special dinner for my sister and I. Usually I'd hunt when mom was away because when she left, she'd be gone for three or more days. It was enough time for me to hunt, kill an animal, skin it, cook it, and dispose of the parts I didn't need. I'd go to the farm about a mile away and give it to the pigs. I looked at my knife as it was shaping the stick to it's needed shape. I finished five arrows and put them in the compartment and closed it. I sighed and laid down on my bed. I closed my eyes not intending to sleep, but I slipped onto unconscious.

(This is the longer part so far. I hope y'all enjoyed and it didn't make you that sad.)
