Chapter 27
I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t want to believe it. I refused to believe it.
Aaron? Cheating on me? With Carly?
No.
“W…w…what?” I stuttered, barely able to bring myself to ask the question, “how…how do you know?”
Laurane had tears in her eyes, and the pitiful look that she was giving me made me realize that she wasn’t making this up.
“Carly has texts, Sammi,” she quietly said, “texts from Aaron. From the past couple weeks…even from yesterday. She showed me them last night, after you left and before Jesse came over. She stopped by…she wanted me – wanted you – to know.”
It just didn’t make any sense.
If Carly really had “proof”, why would she go to Laurane?
It was as if Laurane had read my mind, because she answered that question without me even needing to ask.
“Aaron wasn’t going to dump you for Carly, and she knew it. Carly hated being the ‘other girl’. She felt bad about it, and out of spite she ratted Aaron out to me – his sister.”
As this all sunk in, it started to make sense.
But I still didn’t want to believe it.
“Aaron loves me,” I whispered, standing up, “he loves me!”
I was yelling now.
“He wouldn’t do that to me! I love him, and he loves me too!”
I picked up a shoe and chucked it across the room. It hit the mirror and cracked it, making a screeching noise that made Laurane flinch.
I barely noticed though, as I was in a rage.
“Sammi, come on,” Laurane started to say, attempting to calm me down.
I didn’t listen though, and I didn’t let her say anything else.
“No!” I shouted, “don’t say anything! Carly’s lying! You're lying! Aaron loves me, dammit!”
I collapsed on the floor, crying. Deep down, even I knew that what I was saying wasn’t the truth. I just didn’t want to admit it – I couldn’t.
I sat there on the floor, crying and whispering “he loves me…” over and over again while Laurane sat there next to me, holding me tight – holding me together.
When I had calmed down and cried myself out, I had a clearer mind.
“Alright,” I said, “text Carly and tell her to come over. Now.”
Laurane grabbed her phone, and within minutes Carly appeared at our door.
I was sitting up on my bed at this point, hugging a pillow..
“Um, hi,” I said awkwardly.
“Hey,” Carly said.
She walked over and sat on the edge of my bed, looking at me with pity in her eyes.
“Okay, Sammi, I’m going to be brutally honest and admit that I really don’t like you at all. But Aaron’s hurt both of us, and if you need someone who knows what you're going through, I’m here if you want to talk.”
Carly said this all in a rush, and I almost didn’t catch what she was saying. But I did, and I had to admit, I was impressed.
“Likewise,” I said.
Carly showed Laurane and I both the texts that she and Aaron had exchanged in the past couple days, which the latest being yesterday.
Sure enough, there was no doubt that Aaron had been cheating on me.
Great.
Laurane and I thanked Carly (well, Laurane thanked her – I just kind of sat on my bed and stared at her) for telling us, and then Carly left.
Laurane sat down next to me and put her arm around me.
“Now what?” she asked hesitantly.
I took a deep breath, and closed my eyes. Then I said the hardest thing I had ever had to say, but something that I knew was the best for not just me, but for everyone.
“Now we move on.”
