I woke up to the sound of screaming. Through the crack of my door, I saw the lights on in the hallway. Curious about what was going on I grabbed Patch, my teddy bear, and peaked out into the hallway.
Mommy was on the floor crying, next to daddy. Daddy was lying with his face against the floor. A man was standing with a gun at mommy’s head.
“I don’t know where it is never told me where he hid it this time,” she sobbed, as she looked up her eyes locked with mine, “run,” she mouthed to me.
I quietly ran back into my room, I opened my window up and climbed out, my leg was scraped on the way out. I looked back as I heard a loud bang of the gun. Then I ran as fast as I could.
I remembered daddy telling me if I am ever scared run to the police station, a couple roads over and if I cannot get there then a well-lighted area with lots of people. So I ran to the police station. I ran inside and everyone’s eyes shifted to me.
A woman walked over to me, “What’s wrong sweetie?” she asked.
Tears were rushing down my face, “Th-th-there w-was a str-ange man in my house, my d-daddy was lying with his face to the fl-floor. The man was asking for something, I think. Mommy said she does not know where it is, she saw me and mouthed for me to run. I did and then I heard a shot go off, I couldn’t hear mommy crying anymore.”
The woman ran and said something to someone else, and then a bunch of people went outside.
“Do you know your address sweetie?” she asked me.
“Yes, “I said and then I told her it.
She stayed with me, and gave me cookies.
The police officers came back, they whispered to the woman. I could barely make it out but I heard them say, “There was nobody at the house, her parents aren’t there. The house was spotless, except for a tiny bit of torn wallpaper, there is blood under it. Somebody tried hard to clean up their mess quickly, but they missed a spot when they heard the sirens. My guess is that they did not even know that the little girl was there or that the Hudsons even had a child for that matter. I say we keep her out of the news, he may come after her if he finds out she witnessed it, she may know more than she thinks.”
The woman nodded and walked over to me, “I’m sorry sweetie they couldn’t find him or your parents, they are missing.”
I started crying again and held my bear close.
“What is your name sweetie?” she asked.
“Krystal,” I told her.
“Well Krystal, I’m taking you home with me. Are you okay with staying with me, my husband,” she pointed to the officer she was just talking to. “and my two children Lucas and Emily, they are about your age?”
“Yeah, “I nodded. “ You will keep me safe right?” I asked.
“Forever and always, it may take time but we will find that man, I can promise you that.”
