Soulmates. What a joke
It started out innocently enough. The occasional, "I'll do the dishes tonight." or, "I really liked that movie you picked." appearing on your arm or leg. But, it progressed.
"I got caught up at work late, babe." Bucky told you as you were sitting on the couch with some water, waiting for him to come home.
"It's 3 in the morning, Buck. That's not late."
With a roll of his eyes, he just walked to your shared bedroom, laying down. You felt a slight burning on your hand, making your eyes drift down. There's the lie—etched onto your skin.
You set the cup on the table, curling up on the sofa with small sniffles being the only sound in the room. Not wanting to face the reality of your relationship with the love of your life, you eventually drifted off to sleep.
"Hey, wake up." Steve shook you awake gently, his voice soft.
"What time is it?" Yawning and stretching, you looked up at him.
"It's past noon. I need you to get up." He tugged on your arm a little bit, making you sit up.
His legs were bouncing up and down as he rested on the loveseat, eyes looking everywhere but you.
"Steve. What's wrong? You're never nervous."
"I have something to tell you. You're my best friend and I can't keep this from you, it would be wrong."
"Okay, enough with the moral compass. Tell me." You wrapped a blanket around you, staring at him.
"Um...well, Bucky, Natasha and I were on a mission about a week ago," you could already see where this was going,
"I had gone to get a shower and when I finally got out and went to check on Bucky, he was in bed with Natasha...y'know, fonduing."
A breathy chuckle escaped your form, your eyes tearing up.
"Even when you're telling me he cheated on me, you can't say it outright. God, you're so innocent."
"I'm so sorry." The blonde whispered in your hair as he pulled you close.
"Mmm, can I be alone for a while?"
He gave you a sympathetic nod before leaving your floor. It's not like you weren't suspicious of Bucky's late night activities or his frequent lying. Deep down, you knew.
As you sat in the living room for hours, the sun began to set. Eventually standing up, you went to your bedroom and began to pack your things. You promised yourself if anyone ever did this to you, you would leave. And you were doing just that.
"Hey, babe? What are you doi-?" Bucky stopped mid-sentence as he watched you put your important belongings in a large suitcase.
"Stop, what's wrong?" He touched your hand to keep it from folding any more clothes.
You turned to look at him, staring straight into his blue eyes but you didn't say a word before turning back to your activity of leaving.
"Baby, tell me what I did!" Bucky raised his voice.
"Look me in the eyes and tell me you didn't sleep with Natasha on that mission. Tell me he's lying." Your head whipped so you could look at him.
Bucky's mouth went dry before he began to stutter,
"I-I, wait a second, did Steve say that?"
"So, you're not denying it?" The zipper of your now fully packed suitcase filled the silence in the room as you zipped it shut.
His head shook, before his eyes found the carpet more interesting. A small, bitter laugh made its way up your throat.
"Okay then."
With your suitcase rolling behind you, you made your way to the elevator, pushing the down button.
"Wait!" Bucky chased after you, meeting you at the elevator, slipping his metal hand in your flesh one.
"Please, don't go. Please..." He pleaded.
With a shake of your head, you stepped into the now open elevator, pressing the button to the ground floor.
"I love you..." Bucky whispered before the doors shut.
A searing pain made its way onto your arm, angry markings now indelibly affixed to your skin. Those three words. He didn't love you.
Soulmates. What a joke.
