My body jolted as my alarm went off. I quickly grabbed my phone to shut the alarm off and looked at the time, which read 7AM. Today was my first day of junior year and I was actually pretty excited about it.
The last two years of high school had been complete shit. I was in a relationship with my asshole ex-boyfriend, Brad, who was extremely controlling. He wanted all my time, which meant I never really got to enjoy high school. I tried to break up with him a couple of times, but he always put me down, telling me that I would never find someone who treated me better than he did and I should feel lucky to be with him. I let him treat me like shit, but after my dad died, I finally built up the confidence to leave him. To say things ended badly was an understatement, but I didn't really care because I wasn't going to have to see him anymore since he was transfering to another school.
This year was going to be my fresh start. I had wasted two years of my high school experience, as I wasn't going to let that continue. I was determined to get out there and do anything and everything.
I quickly got out of bed and got dressed. I normally just wear leggings and a t-shirt to school but I decided to dress up since it was the first day. I choose a light yellow shirt and my high waisted jeans, along with some white shoes. The colors matched well with my bright red hair. I undid my braid from the night before, giving my hair a beach wave effect. I walked over to my vanity and applied minimal makeup before heading downstairs for breakfast.
As I enter the kitchen I see my mother seated at the table.
"Good morning" I say as I open the fridge.
"Good morning" she replies.
My mother and I have never had a strong relationship. I always went to my father for advice or if I had a problem. I considered him my best friend, but now he was gone and I felt as though I was alone. Don't get me wrong, I loved my mom, but we just weren't that close.
"Don't forget track tryouts are Friday" she states.
"Oh right. I almost forgot"
"Are you excited about your first day?"
"Yeah. I'm really excited. I have big plans for this year" I say as a smile appears on my face.
"That's great sweetie. I'm so proud and I know your father would be too". As she says this, I see her eyes start to tear up.
We aren't big on talking about our emotions in this family so I offer her a smile and give her a hug before I grab my keys and head to school.
I park my car in it's designated spot and look at the time, which reads 7:40. I'm a little early so I sit in my car and continue to listen to my music. After a few minutes I notice more cars pulling into the parking lot and decide to head in. As I walk towards the building, I hear someone calling my name.
"Caroline! Hey! Caroline!"
I turn around to see Harry Styles, the class clown. Harry and I had a few classes together in freshman year but I hadn't seen him much since then.
I smiled at him and said "Hey Harry! How are you? We didn't really get to see each other last year."
"I'm pretty good and I know! I missed messing around with you during class. What are your classes like this year?"
We both pull out our schedule and look over them.
"Oh look, we have lunch and 8th period together!"
"Nice! I'll see you then!" He says as he puts his schedule back in his bag and runs to catch up with a few of the guys that are ahead of us.
When I reach my locker, I see my friend Jessica waiting for me. Jessica and I have been friends since grade school. We spent a lot of time together over the summer since I wasn't with Brad anymore.
"OMG you look great!" she says as I open my locker.
"Thank you," I reply. We continue talking as I grab my books. We had already compared our schedules over the summer so we knew which classes we had together. After I finished, we walked to our first period together.
My first two periods go by fast and before I know it, it's time for lunch. Sadly, I got the earliest lunch period the school offers but I don't mind since most of my friends also have this lunch. Jessica and I meet at my locker before heading to lunch. As we walk in, we find our other friends, Madison and Kyra, at a table near the back. We plop our stuff down on the table before heading in line to grab lunch.
As we walk back to the table with our food, I notice Harry a couple of tables away from us. We make eye contact and he waves at me. As I sit down, Madison says "Look at you, already moving on from Brad".
"No way! Harry and I are just friends! He's friends with everyone." I answer.
"Yeah, ok." She scoffs.
We continue talking as we eat and I take a few glances at Harry. He is really sweet and funny, but I don't think he would ever be into me. He's pretty popular around school, and a lot of girls like him. He doesn't seem like a player but he could be since he's so good looking.
As I take another glance at him, I hear Kyra say something.
"What do you think Caroline?"
"Huh?" I ask, refocusing myself on the conversation.
"What do you think about the new kid? Jake." She points to a boy I've never seen before near the middle of the cafeteria. "He just moved here from Texas." she continues. He has dirty blonde hair that is pushed back and brown eyes. He is pretty good looking, but nothing to rant about compared to some of the other guys at the school.
"He's alright." I finally replied.
At that moment, Jake looks up and catches me looking at him. His face immediately goes red, but he smiles at me. I reciprocated the smile and turned back towards my friends.
A few minutes later, the bell rings and everyone stands up and heads to their next class.
Hi guys! I hope you enjoyed this first chapter, I'm sorry if it wasn't that great. This is my first book so I am still learning but I really hope you guys enjoy it. I have a lot of things planned for this book so keep reading! I promise it will get better!
