Virgil looked around Logan and Roman's room. It was a medium sized room, perhaps a little bit small for two people. There was a bed just big enough for the both of them, a dresser with six drawers, three on either side, a desk with a computer and papers neatly organized on it, a small laundry basket halfway filled, and a closet with the door currently hanging open.
He knew he really shouldn't be going through their things, but he needed to know if they were lying. If they were lying about Logan being a beta, what else might they be lying about? His medication, their jobs, why they had to leave their old place? What if Logan was a serial killer or something? What if he'd killed their old landlord and all the other tenants and that's why they'd had to move? What if he was an omega who hated alphas and wanted to kill all alphas?! Well, probably not that last one. What if he was an omega who hated alphas and wanted to kill all alphas except for Roman?! Or what if he was someone they'd wronged in the past somehow and totally forgot about and now he was back for revenge?
He held up Logan's shirt to his face and breathed in deeply, closing his eyes. He took the scent in deeply, allowing it to surround him. All alphas have incredible senses of smell, and Virgil's was above average even for an alpha. Patton used to have so much fun holding up different objects and making Virgil guess what class had held it last, or he'd point to schoolmates and ask Virgil what they were feeling and why. Virgil never knew why they were feeling what they were, but he'd make up little stories to entertain Patton. Those little games had made Virgil even better at recognizing scents.
The scent on Logan's shirt was something between an alpha and an omega's scent. The alpha smell wasn't Roman, it was faint and smelled more of wet ink and dusty old books. Maybe Logan was cheating and using an omega's scent to hide it? That would explain his supposed outings to look for jobs, when he would come back smelling more and more like an omega each time. And maybe that's why Roman got so possessive whenever an alpha or beta got close to Logan, because this sort of thing had happened before. Alpha-beta pairings were infamous for infidelity, since alphas supposedly could only be satisfied with an omega and betas alledgedy couldn't choose a side. But they seemed to be so in love...
No, it was all Logan's scent. It was a single scent, just... weird. Usually smelling between an alpha and an omega would indicate being a beta to Virgil, but it wasn't quite right. It smelled more like a mix of the scents than being strictly between them. It smelled like an alpha trying to be an omega, or the other way around. Virgil had heard of false scents, for people who needed to have a scent other than their own for various purposes (quite often criminal). But those scents were supposed to be super convincing, Virgil had smelt something off from the day he'd met Logan. Maybe he got a really cheap kind? Or it was something else entirely? ...Or maybe it was a beta scent and Virgil hadn't spent a lot of time with a beta other than Logan in a while.
He put Logan's shirt down and looked around the room. He went to the dresser and looked through the drawers. The first row didn't have anything of note, it was just Roman's clothing. He sighed and looked at Logan's side, opening the first drawer. He grinned. Prescription bottles.
"Bingo." He whispered to himself, immediately starting to go through them. He picked up one and looked at it.
Logan Turing
Progesterone 500 MG Tablet
Take one tablet by mouth twice daily
Virgil looked at the label and frowned. He didn't understand what the fuck it was saying. Don't prescription bottles have things like 'take this for pain' or 'this will hide your omega scent' or something? He put the bottle down and looked at another one.
Logan Turing
Estradiol 500 MG Tablet
Take one tablet by mouth once daily
...How did literally anyone understand what the fuck was in their medication? It probably helps to be familiar with the terms being used, but why didn't they just make it so anyone could pick it up and know what it did? What if Logan forgot what his meds were for or something? Or someone else was dying in this room, found the bottles, and needed one of these tablets to live but didn't know what they did so they didn't take it and then died even though all they would have needed was some estradiol or whatever? He sighed and set it down, then closed the drawer. There wasn't even a point in looking at the other bottles if they were all going to be labeled like that. He looked around the room again, then went to their bed, sniffing the bedsheets. Yep, Roman and Logan had definitely slept in this bed, but he knew that already. At least it didn't smell like they'd had sex in it. Then he stopped, something suddenly clicking in his brain.
This was creepy and wrong. What if one of them walked in on him right now? Logan would be beyond uncomfortable, he'd feel so violated. He would probably never be able to look at Virgil the same way. Roman would be so angry, considering he was so protective of Logan. He'd have Virgil's head if he ever found out. Virgil shivered as he thought of how Roman had growled at the man at the store who'd gotten close to Logan. He did not want to be on the receiving end of Roman's anger, especially since what he was doing was much worse than getting in Logan's personal bubble. And Patton...
Patton would be so disappointed. Virgil could almost feel Patton's disapproving gaze on him then, confused with a tinge of sadness. The way Patton would apologize to Roman and Logan, for Virgil's behavior, give some sort of an excuse that they all would know was total bullshit. How he would be more quiet than normal for the next few days, watching Virgil whenever he headed in the direction of Logan and Roman's room. Virgil would apologize, and Patton would brush it off. He'd say it was okay, but they would both know it wasn't. Virgil had violated their friends' boundaries and trust, and that would make Patton more upset than if it really did turn out Logan and Roman were lying to them. Because it was Virgil, and Virgil was supposed to be better than this. He left their room and burrowed under his blankets, trying to clear his head.
Logan smelt wrong, but what if it wasn't wrong and Virgil just didn't know what a beta smelt like? Or what if it was wrong but it wasn't because they were lying? Would spending time with omegas really change his scent that much?
At dinner, he avoided eye contact with Logan and Roman. He claimed he was tired and had had a hard day at work. He avoided any and all questions about what he'd been up to that day, even the ones that probably wouldn't have led to him confessing that he'd been sniffing Logan's shirts. He went straight back to his room after dinner, leaving everyone to wonder what was wrong.
