Brit Lit

My eyes scanned the almost empty lecture hall. It was just as I had pictured it. Rows upon rows of seats with desks built in. Chalkboard in the front of the room. Doors down by the front and another set up behind the rows in the back.

Sara and I had come in the doors in the back unintentionally so we both walked down the steps that were between the rows of seats to take a seat in the front row. The professor's name was written in fancy cursive writing across the entirety of the chalkboard in the front of the room.

"Mr. Johnson." Sara said.

"Brit Lit." I confirmed, chuckling.

We had shown up to class forty minutes early in hope that we would be able to meet Mr. Johnson and get on good terms with him before the semester, but that was to no prevail as there were no signs of even his existence in the room at all. You wouldn't even know it was his room if his name wasn't written across the board.

Sara had come to class in a pair of black leggings with a black Def Leppard t-shirt and black boots with a black snapback hat. If she had added any eyeliner, she would've looked almost gothic.

The two of us were the only ones in the room so everything we said echoed. Of course. I learned that the acoustics were great when I started singing Hey There Delilah. Someone walked in unnoticed about halfway through my performance and clapped when I finished. Oops.

It was a guy. Tall, glasses, blue eyes, dark medium length hair kept in a ponytail with an undercut underneath. You know, the stereotypical straight white girl prey.

"Hey, " he said, walking towards us, "My name's Corwin."

Sara held out her hand for him to shake, "Nice to meet you, Corwin."

"Nice to meet you as well, Miss?"

"Sarabelle, but Sara."

"Nice to meet you Sara." he took her hand and instead of shaking it, he kissed the back of it. He was NOT flirting with my girlfriend! I already claimed her!

"My name's Kasey." I interjected, "and Sara is taken." I said, lacing our fingers together.

"Very well." Corwin said, looking taken aback a little. He sat down on the opposite side of Sara from me, probably feeling my temper rising.

When the class started, Mr. Johnson walked in just ten seconds late, proving to us that being just a little bit late can be a lot a bit rude. It showed that being a little bit late makes a lot of difference.

"Good morning class! Bright and early huh? Well I'm going to skip all the boring hubbub and get straight to the point. This week, you'll be giving partner presentations about yourselves. And don't worry about choosing your partners because I've already chosen them for you!"

"Oh great, just my luck." I said under my breath, to which Sara squeezed my hand in response.

Mr. Johnson read over his list, twenty-five pairs. I counted.

"Bryan and Luke, Michelle and Charlotte, Logan and Taylor, Edgar and Mei, Micheal and Jennifer, Kelsey and Leslie, Kasey and Corwin," Oh fuck me, "Adrian and Jordan, Francis and Josie, Richard and Gabrielle, Sarabelle and Chloe, Ethan and Perseus, Azland and Zachary, Madison and Emily, Katie and Xavier, Lillian and Miriam, Oliver and Alexander, William and Damien, Nicolas and Spencer, Summer and Tyler, Ruth and Elliot, Breanna and Riley, Stephan and Harriet, Isaac and Dorothy, Krystal and Anthony. Those are your pairs, no switching partners. This is an exercise to help you get along with and get to know your classmates."

I let my head fall down to the built in desk as Mr. Johnson went to go sit at his desk. Corwin is the most oblivious annoying person I've met since yesterday when I moved in. He flirts with my girlfriend and now I have to get to know him? What if I don't want to get to know him? Huh? What then?

"Hey there," someone said, tapping my head.

I look up to see Corwin and groaned, slamming my head back on the desk. Sara had already gone to find Chloe and that left just Corwin and I to 'make small talk' and 'get to know one another'. Corwin tapped the top of my head again, "Come on sweetheart, tell me about yourself." he said, a smirk on his face.

"First thing you oughta know about me, I hate pet names, so back off. Second thing, Sara is my girlfriend, not yours, so again, back off. And three, I hate group projects so why don't you just text me a list of things I need to know about you and I'll do the same and we can do the assignment separately. Okay?"

"You're a tad feisty, aren't you?" he said, obviously making fun of me, "How about we don't do that because that's a terrible plan, and instead I'll meet you in your dorm at eight?"

I rolled my eyes, "Fine, but no hitting on my girlfriend while you're there and no hitting on my other roommates while you're there either."

"Very well, Miss Kasey, I shall see you at eight." Corwin did a kind of salute and turned to head up the steps. A few seconds later I heard the back doors swing open and slam shut. Thank god.

I turned around to see Sara chatting away with who I had assumed to be Chloe. Walking towards the pair, I could see that they had already started working on their project. Sara had several lists already made of things they had in common and things that were individual traits.

"Hey guys, mind if I join you? My partner left." I said, sitting down before they could answer.

"Yeah, sure," Sara said, "This is Ray."

I looked at her kind of confused and she just stared back at me until I had my moment of realization. Ah, okay. Ray.

"Pronouns?" I asked Ray softly enough that other people wouldn't hear.

"He him or they them." Ray replied, not even worrying about whispering.

"Well it's nice to meet you."

"Ray is coming over tonight at eight if that's okay with you." Sara said, looking from Ray to me and back.

"Yes, please, of course. That's when Corwin is coming over too and I want as many witnesses there, I mean, as many people there as possible." I became flustered, stumbling graciously over my words.

"Okay great, maybe we could do a potluck kind of thing? So we can all have dinner in the dorm?"

"Yeah! That sounds cool! I can bring chips and dip if that works?" Ray offered.

"Perfect, and we can stop by Safeway or something and pick up a few of those sub-like sandwiches."

"Perfect. Okay, I'll let you two get back to work." I said, pulling my laptop out of my bag.

What could Corwin and I possibly have in common. Other than taste in girls. I closed my computer and instead pulled out my phone, opting to play a racing game on my phone instead of actually being productive.

And that's what I did, for the rest of the two hour long class. Play racing games on my phone and listen to Sara and Ray's conversation. Tonight is going to be hell.

Haha, look at that, I got the chapter out before midnight! Enjoy the first encounters between Corwin and Kasey. How do you think the dorm room situation go?

After I write, I don't edit. I write and I post, so if there's problems with grammar, please don't correct me in the comments, there's bound to be mistakes!
