Never The Right Time

Ik-joon- Eating with you, having coffee with you spending time with you that is the treat I give myself.

Her heart literally skipped a beat. She looked up at him and turned instantly tears clouding her eyes. He really was a jerk to do this to her now, After all this time. He is the only guy who can affect her so.

Song hwa- Eat up

She tried to brush it off and be normal. That was what he usually did right? Brush off any serious topic, as it dint matter. Nothing ever mattered to him.

He told her it was raining, she hadn't even noticed it she could not when he just said something that made her heart flutter.  She rushed to open the window. She loved rain, her mood always improved when it rained. They cleaned up the kitchen together discussing Uju and what time he usually got up, with her insisting he go lie down now. His words seem to hang in the air between them and there was something electric between them and he kept looking at her differently. She tried to ignore it like she usually did telling herself it meant nothing. This was ik joon, he never made a move even after all these years. Even after her confession he had casually brushed it off. He did not like her

He suddenly stopped what he was doing to turn and stare at her. He took her hand in his, she stared at him, her treacherous heart beating quickly

Song hwa- What?

Ik joon looking into her eyes- You know I like you right? Always.

This damned guy knew how to mess with her. It was a joke, obviously.

Song hwa- Of course, I like you too..

Ik joon- No not just as a friend,  I like you as a women. I have since the day I met you.. And gave you that scrunchie..

There it was, 20 years she had waited for these words from him. She still had that scrunchie, the one he gave her the first time they met. She had tried to throw it out so many times but she just could not bring herself to. She always had hope, for years that he would finally say what he had just told, but now after all this time the words seemed hallow to her. It just made her angry. She tugged off her hand

Song hwa- Am leaving. Check on Uju of his temperature is ok.

She hurried to wear her shoes. He stood in the same spot for a moment then called out to her

Ik joon- Am sorry. I was a coward.

She froze at that, he was one the biggest coward she had known. She had liked him for years from college even seeing him with his string of girlfriends had never dettered her. Then one drunken night she had confessed and even tried to kiss him. He stopped her and tucked her in bed before telling her the timing was not right for them. He had pretended that nothing had happened the next day. That was what stung her the most not even the rejection. She knew she was friendzoned, but the compelte denial hurt her. She had kept her distance from him for a few days. However, she could not stay away from him for too long. They had fallen back into their familiar friendship soon enough.

She guarded her heart around him though. Even when he tried broaching the subject once jokingly asking her if she would marry him if he was single by 35. She had said no quite emphatically in front of their gang. He had looked hurt but as always turned on the smile a second later.

The joke was on her cause he was married before 35. She had not gone to his wedding. Sighting an emergency surgery as an excuse, she had gotten drunk alone in her apartment crying for hours. There was again a break in their friendship, but as always he weaseled his way into her life again. After hearing his about his divorce she dont even know how to feel. She had told herself it was just pointless to pine after the guy for years. She had not exactly been pining for she had her share of boyfriends but deep down she knew she would never quite forget him. She gave all her relationships her best just like she did her job but they never lasted.

Now after 20 long years of heartbreak she finally hears him admit he was a coward

Ik joon- I liked you from the moment I met you. After you rejected  Seok-hyung I did not want to confess. You told me that night you liked me and I was in a relationship, I broke up with her that same day and tried to tell you. But you went and hooked up with that senior. I even tried my shot years later jokingly ofcourse, you know am a coward. Timing was never right. I tried to tell myself to move on. I never got over you. I could not. You are always the one. I love you.

Song hwa- I waited for these words for years. I have been stuck on you forever. But now it means nothing they just seem like empty words to me.

She is about to leave.

Ik joon- Che song hwa. Sorry. I love you. It doesnt matter if you dont answer but I had to tell you once at least once.

She stopped not able to ignore those words. Somehow when he said those words nothing else seemed to matter. She went over and kissed him and pulled back in a second.

Song hwa- Coward. I hope you know how much you hurt me all this time.

He pulled her close hugging her. Never wanting to let her go.

Ik joon- I dint am sorry. I thought I was hurting only myself. Am a selfish bastard.
