My Good Werewolf

It was nearly Christmas break, when everyone at Hogwarts would be going home to celebrate the holidays with their families. Well, almost everyone.

Sirius was lying awake in bed. No matter how much he turned over or pictured his favorite places in his head he just couldn't get to sleep. Part of this was that he never got to sleep easily. But mostly it was that soon he would be going back to Number 12, Grimaced Place, where he was sure to be abused in myriad ways.

Sirius tossed and turned. Each member of his family went into his head. His mean, abusive mother with a hot iron in her hand. His proud and arrogant father strutting around and making it perfectly clear that Sirius would be left out of his will. His cousin Bellatrix cursing him until he shrieked with pain and fell over, rigid, trying hard to stop himself from pleading with her just to end it. And then his brother Regulus, looking, as always, trapped and scared. Sirius could never get that look out of his mind.

Sirius lay flat on his back panting. Waves of fear, heat, panic and anxiety were crashing over him. He tried in vain to conceal a wimper as he yanked the covers off and squeezed through the open window leading to a ledge he could sit on. He gulped at the cool air and then climbed out onto the ledge. It was a large place to sit. Sirius could have just slept there, and he would have, but he heard a familiar voice next to him.

He spun around to see the familiar face of Remus John Lupin, one of his best friends in the world. Remus looked down at him with sympathy etched in his sweet scarred face.

"Hey Siri." Said Remus looking at Sirius intently. The look Remus gave him was too concerned for an excuse like "I just wanted a view of the grounds." Sirius could tell that Remus had heard that small and involuntary noise as he was trying to get out of bed.

"Hi Moony. Why're you out here?" Sirius replied.

"Same reason as you Sirius." Said Moony.

Sirius looked out at the grounds. "You're here to try and forget about the mental, physical, verbal, and sometimes sexual abuse that probably awaits you at the place you must return to in three days?" Sirius said it in a light tone that to some people might have seemed nonchalant, like he was talking about the weather. But Remus knew better. Remus could hear the sob well concealed in his voice.

Remus moved as if to hold Sirius's hand but Sirius turned away, hiding his face from view. "Sirius you don't have to go there. You can come with me to my house, or to James's for the holidays. Please Sirius I want you to feel safe."

Sirius placed his head in his hands. He was in a crouched position like a child, with his legs tucked up to his chest. His voice was muffled as he said "I know. But I can't let Regulus go there alone. And what's the point staying away one holiday? They'll make sure I pay double for being alive next time I come."

Remus's heart broke for Sirius and his position but he knew that his silence was the only reason Sirius was even allowed to go to Hogwarts. If Sirius's parents found out that Sirius was telling people about the abuse, they'd bring him and Regulus home, seal the place with the fidelius charm, and Sirius would never be heard from again. And Remus knew that without Sirius's friends and the teachers who cared about him, Sirius would probably kill himself. He had already tried a few times but the Blacks didn't care about him at all and would probably hand him knives.

"Hey." Said Remus, his hands finding Sirius's face. "It'll get better. You've survived in that house fifteen years. Just one or two more and you'll be free. Don't forget that."

Sirius's tear-streaked face gazed into Remus's large amber eyes. "I c-can't do it Moony. I c-can't d-o it." Sirius burst into tears. Remus put his arms around Sirius and patted him on the back.

"I know that you can do it. And I'll be with you every step of the way." A single tear left the eye of Remus Lupin. He loved Sirius and couldn't bear to see him in such agony.

"Thank you Moons." Said Sirius still sobbing. They sat together outside for a few more minutes until Remus said, "We should try to get some sleep. Come on Siri." Sirius got up and brushed himself off. He allowed Remus to lead him into the dormitory by the hand. He let Remus pull a thin blanket over him and tuck him in. Then Remus climbed in with Sirius and wrapped an arm protectively over him. "My good dog" Whispered Remus. Sirius turned his head toward Remus and smiled as Remus stroked his hair. "My good werewolf" said Sirius, snuggling into the warmth of Remus. This warmth was different. This warmth was comfortable and relaxing. To Sirius, Remus felt like the home he'd never had.

When James woke up in the morning it was to find them there, all snuggled up in Sirius's bed. James smiled to himself. He had known for a while now that whatever they said to deny it, those boys were in love.
