The streets are silent. No one has come from their houses in days. The Normans had come, pillaging through our small, secluded village. Half the village was burnt to the ground and the other half torn to pieces by the barbaric monstrosities. I, only being in my prime, was one of the only female residents left by the raiders. Women with child, young ones, elderly, and few others were able to remain here in what was left of our forsaken village. Little children sobbed and men fought as they ran their bloody parade around our village, but it was for not. They took everything. Captives, supplies, precious metals, animals, anything they could get their blood soaked hands on. Wounded and dead were discovered all around. This was the fifth time they had invaded. Nothing could prevent them except should they all come to their inevitable demise in the near future. That was the day I was fervently awaiting.

I went off when the village got back on its wounded feet. In the darkness of the night, I ran into the forest behind our village. They call it Nix, for it is forbidden. The people are terrified of what lies within; even on the outskirts of its boundaries. Our Wiseman, Gerand, had gone into it when he was in his younger years. He had come back with knowledge of good and evil things that of which no one could comprehend. He does not recall why he received such revelation, or how it came to be thrust upon him. But I did not care, for what we needed was a knowledge that would destroy the Normans once and for all. I was growing weary of them terrorizing everything I  Knew to be good.

I ran as swiftly as I could. I did not want to be intervened by a townsperson. That would not result well. I made it to the outer wall. I ran to the gate and quietly unlocked it for there were guards posted. My hooded cloak kept me indulged in the darkness while I worked. Luckily for me, I had made it here while the guard was asleep so I didn’t have to waste the drug I had gotten from the herb woman.

I made it through. I quietly opened the gate and locked it behind me. I spotted a tree only a short distance away. I looked up and saw a guard upon the ledge above my head. I had to wait for the guard shift to rotate. I waited.

The substitute came a short while after and I bolted. I had made it! No one had seen me. I kept running until I could no longer see the wall.
