Kyle watched with horror as both of his parents went down with the boat. He was able to see them slip from the railing into the black water through the tears in his eyes, while he clung to the little yellow floating board he had been screwing around with in the ship's pool just hours earlier. He thought back through the entire 20 years of his life, wondering what he had done to deserve this. Eventually due to the numbing cold, even this close to the equator, he passed out.
Kyle woke up to the sound of seagulls and the view of a massive island in the distance, and he could just make out what looked like a... a person? Yes, it was a person wading out to him. But they were huge, possibly 20-30 feet tall. As surprised and scared as Kyle was, he felt his eyelids close again from sheer exhaustion and lack of sustenance.
