This story has the main
protagonist named dayna, in a prison. And also going to discover why she is in prison and what is it that she has done and whatever she had
done, when and where??

we see that Dayna is being taken to prison inside a truck surrounded by many police inspectors. And she was arrested from her village.

When she is finally inside the prison, she meets a lady inspector who tells her that there are four other women in the same prison who are inside, for exactly the same kind of crime that  she has committed. Her crime is that she had murdered her own husband. As time passes in the prison, Dayna meets another prisoner, Deepika, who is also in prison for the same crime as  she is, their crime being murdering their husbands by severing the genitals of their spouses. They become very good friends.
Deepika explains all the rules and regulations of the prison
to Dayna and they go together to the prison mess to have
breakfast. At the mess hall, it is the male prisoners who serve the food and when tea is being served, it has no sugar. The sugar for the tea is taken from the top of the porridge. As their
friendship grows more intense, Deepika tells Dayna about her life and how her husband used to ill-treat her. It is shocking that he was an educated man, in the profession of an education
officer. Her husband used to employ only young girls in his office and had suspended all the male teachers who were
previously working there. Her husband used to exploit the young female staff, as a result of which some got pregnant and they subsequently informed their parents. The parents meet Deepika and tell her about what her husband has done. When she goes to confront her husband, he abuses her very badly and she, in a fit of rage, cuts off his genitals and kills him. This is why she is arrested and brought to this prison. As days go by in the prison, the officials there segregate prisoners for different work. The women are giving the work of stitching clothes and the male prisoners are given tasks of carpentry, or growing vegetables. Dayna is very skilled in making baskets, knitting and weaving and she tells deepika that when they did not have any money at home, she used to utilize her skill to earn money and run the household and feed her children. Deepika gets emotional hearing this, realizing that Dayna had no one to support her in her family and tells Dayna to earn money for her children by working in prison by using her specialized skills. As time goes by, the relationship between Dayna and Deepika becomes more intense and intimate and Dayna tells her companion that she would have never survived prison, if she were not there. There are the two different types of men
in society. The first type is evil. Dayna goes on to say that the African society has the most
number of evil men. She goes on to compare such men to dogs and says that these men get into so-called relationships just for the sake of sexual pleasures. They have no responsibilities.
towards self, society or family and one such evil man was her own husband. She tells her own story about when, after her country’s independence, her husband’s income was just Rs.5000/-, but it soon increased to Rs.20000/-. Inspite of this increase in income, her husband never spends any money for the house and instead spends it all on alcohol and women. He has practically abandoned his wife and children. Then, she talks of the second type of men who are not evil and they actually care for their family and utilize all their resources, emotional and material, for the betterment of their families. And she cites the example of Paul as this kind of a gentleman. And Dayna reminiscences about her past and about Paul, who came to reside in her village in 1966 and how she had helped Paul in settling down in her village. Paul built his house, in the yard space adjoining Dayna’s hut. Over the course of time, Paul, his wife,
Kenalepe, and Dayna become very good friends. Paul’s wife moni was quite well known
in the village due to her sweet nature. Dayna used to share everything with moni, especially her thoughts and her day to day life. Dayna used to love working around the house and she used to make dresses for Paul’s children. Paul did not like that Dayna had to struggle so hard to run her own house and inspite of the hardships she faced, she used to make dresses for his children. For Paul it became a dilemma whether to pay her money or give her some goods from his own house for all her efforts. When Dayna’s husband comes to know of this, he begins to suspect an affair between his wife and Paul, because of which he starts to ill-treat her, to the extent that if she asked him for any help for the house, he would taunt her by telling her to go and ask for help from Paul. Gradually, Dayna starts stitching clothes and selling them to earn money within the village. Her business grows and she hires helpers, buys new sewing machines for expanding her work. Inspite of this, her husband does not support her in any way. As she is narrating all of this, deepika asks Dayna why she married such a man in the first place. Dayna explains that since she was orphaned after the death of her parents, she lived with her uncle who used to treat her like a servant in the house. Dayna felt that her uncle was not caring for her, and since she was getting older, she should get married. When her uncle mentioned his friend, Gaurav and suggested that Dayna should consider getting married to him, Dayna agreed to marry Gaurav. Kenalepe on hearing her sorrowful tale told her that if Dayna's husband did not look after her, she could leave him and get married to another man, since it was better to re-marry, rather than stay alone and single. Moni also goes to the extent of telling Dayna that she would not mind sharing her husband Paul with her, so that she would know the true
meaning of intimacy and the actual pleasure that came with an intimate relationship.Dayna had already lost interest in
physical intimacy and she refused moni’s offer.Dayna continues with her story, that she had three children and her eldest son was in secondary class in school and that she was falling short of money for her son’s school admission. She informs her husband and asks him for the money. On hearing his, her husband abuses her and tells her to ask money from her ‘lover’ Paul. Following this, Dayna and Gaurav decide to separate. But one day, Gaurav  sends her a letter, telling her that he would
be coming to her house and to make food for him and meet her. Dayna still asks him if he
would help her with money for their son’s school fees. Her husband tells her that once he comes home, he would talk to her about this. Dayna, on that day, sharpens the knife and prepares an elaborate meal for her husband. After Gaurav  has had his meal and sleeps on the bed, Dayna removes his undergarments and cuts off his genitals. Her son comes in and she tells him to go and call the police since she has killed her husband. Moni also comes in, and is terrified at the scene in front of her., Paul enters the room, and he feels anguish at what Dayna had to undergo. He knows that the police will be coming shortly to take her, so to ease her troubled mind he promises her that while she is in prison, he will look after her children as his own and see to it that they get a good education.
