1 MONTH TO THE PRESENT DAY...
[ HENRY'S POV ]
Jasper springs into action fast - I can see him from the corner of my eye as he punches one guy square on the jaw, shouting Spanish as he does. I take my focus back to the two blokes around me, it all started like a simple mugging but these guys know how to fight well, really well. They're in perfect rhythm in the way they fight, as well as the other guy, they seem like they know all the same tricks and moves. I move through blocking their punches as I swing my leg underneath the nearest one causing him to crush to the ground. The other stares at me, his hand in his coat pocket. A shot fires as he draws out a gun, the bullet flies towards me and I hear what sounds like a distant shout from Jasper. It bounces off me and clatters harmlessly to the ground.
Behind me, I also hear two thumps as Jasper and the mugger fall to the ground. I turn my attention to find the guy racing off - I could go after him but I can't leave Jasper here alone, he could get hurt. Pulling him up by his hand, I sling his arm over my shoulder; it may take a while this way but at least it'll look like he was purely intoxicated and I was simply a friend helping him home. It is a long way to Blake's, but it weren't like I was going to ask him for a lift, because if any of what Char accused of me was true, I don't want any help from him.
Around five months prior...
'To be honest, I was never really that confident about this whole crime fighting thing at the start, like I never planned to do it.' Blake says as we sit down at a booth with our drinks, it's late in the evening so we were lucky to even find somewhere to sit.
'So why did you? What changed?'
'This city - it's hard to come here and not want to do anything - I think as soon as I witnessed my first mugging, I just knew I had to do something.' I smile in agreement - don't I know that feeling, it's only the feeling I've had since we came here. You can't go too far anywhere here without being on the verge of crime.
'I'm the same, I mean, Swellview was the heart of it. Just seeing Captain Man and Kid Danger fight for us was all the motivation I needed, if they could lay their life down for strangers, I should be willing as well.' Thinking back to the first time I ever put on the mask, I can't even remember why I did it, I just felt like I had to. And again a couple days ago I had done the same, put on glasses and became someone new entirely. We did have a duty to protect the people and why shouldn't I try my best.
I watch Blake as he scrolls through his phone in the moment of silence, his hair flapping over his eye ever so slightly and he's got a piercings - just a few - on his ear. I didn't notice that before, neither do I really know anything about him, we may have a joint past but not one I'm really well educated in.
'Sorry, I got a text. My ex keeps connecting me,' He sighs typing away, 'I broke up with him for a reason, too clingy, it's just ironic that he's proving my point.'
'Oh,' The sound escapes my mouth before I can help it, causing the brunette to roll his eyes, placing his phone down.
'Always the reaction, always the same gasp of surprise. Like I said Hen feelings change.' The words hit hard, and to be truthful I'm not sure why, and why should I even care that he likes boys. It's none of my business who he likes, much less that he needs to explain himself to me.
'So, you have a girlfriend?' I'm drawn back to our present shaking my head, 'Would you like one?'
I mean, I guess, not that there's many girls around I like. There's Charlotte but she's Charlotte - I can't date her, and that's even if she likes me back. And after the whole incident at the Zoo, she clearly does not.
'I guess, yeah? You offering to be my wing man?' He slowly drinks his beer, staring towards me.
'Do you have a boyfriend? Would you want one?' The words from his mouth comes out slowly as if he's putting extra effort and care into each one. I think he carries on talking but my head starts to go fuzzy, as if these words have instantly caused me to self destruct. I stand up from the table, positioned to leave.
'Hen?'
I make my exit.
