Ok, just breathe. You can do this. Just hurry up and pray for the day to be over soon.
You pile the four plates from the counter and somehow balance them on your shaky arms. Trying not to trip, you carry them through the room and actually manage to give out the plates one by one to every table they belong to. The two young girls at the first table hadn't been too upset about the delay, they even smiled and thanked you once you handed them their food which had taken way too long. But the man at the last table isn't very amused so you can already see his anger from the other side of the room.
So here you stand, waiting for his speech about why he can't afford to wait for his food that long to be over. "Some people have a real job, young lady, and do you think I want to spend my whole lunch break sitting here waiting for my food only because you want to take your time?"
Want to take your time? Who is this man to rant at you so disrespectful and rude? You took a closer look at him while he was letting out his anger. He's probably in his forties, a small man with only little pieces of hair on his head and tiny glasses with no frame. Pretty ugly, you think. Be nice, y/n. "I'm so sorry, sir. I have been trying my best to get all meals done as quickly as possible but today I'm the only employee and I have so many orders at the same -", you try to say but he interrupts you. "I really don't care, okay? I'm not here to listen to your apologies. Just give me my bagels and my coffee and I'll go now." You could have smashed his stupid bagels into his face at this point but you do what your boss always tells you to do when when customers are being aggressive. Smile, apologize and admit that it's your fault. And of course promise that something like this will never happen again. No matter what happened before, the customer is "always right" so you have to hold yourself back. The situation is really embarrassing to you since you can already feel the gazes of other customers drilling into your back. How can someone be so rude to a waitress who's just trying to do her job?
Luckily the man is finally done with his exaggerating speech and leaves the cafe. You try not to look too intimidated when you turn around from the table but you feel your cheeks heating up so quickly that you just try to avoid eye contact with the other customers and go back behind your counter. Wow, that was embarrassing, you think to yourself. Didn't he see me running around like crazy? How could he say I would be "taking my time"? Some people are really... something. Ugh, why do I even think about this. He's just stupid. Now forget about it and go on with work, there are still another two hours to go. You just shake your head and turn to the tablet to look at the other orders that still have to be prepared. It's a lot, but you just try to stay calm and get all the orders done one by one. You feel like a robot finishing it's tasks, not thinking about anything. Look at order, prepare, bring it to the table, get back to the counter. Although you are trying to get everything done as quickly as possible, you at least don't feel as stressed as before.
A bunch of macchiatos, frappes, cakes, bagels and ice cream cones later you are finally able to breathe for a minute without any new orders. You lean your back against the wall and close your eyes for a few seconds. You do not dare to look at the kitchen side of the counter since you haven't had the time yet to clean up any dish of the last two hours. Why does everyone have to be sick on a saturday, the most visited day of the week? This morning you hadn't been feeling very well either but your boss can't afford to close the cafe for a whole day. In cases like this you just cannot leave people by themselves, it would have been unfair and you know you can be very grateful to be able to work at this cafe. It has the best location since it's right in the middle of the city and it's so well visited that your boss is very picky when it comes to his employees. He can be very strict but he is always fair and looks out for you and your co-workers, so you don't want to disappoint him and try to do your best every day.
