CHAPTER THREE

"Jeez, I hate the goddamn man-eating snakes."

"Mom!"

The air seemed to suffocate me as I ran into my mother's frail arms. Her entire body was quaking with un-shed tears, but her arms wrapped around me like steel chords.

"Don't let them do it!" I cried, my words muffled by her shirt. My heart felt like it was ripped out, and then sewed back in by someone with no medical experience at all. I tried to breath, but couldn't. "Don't let them. I can't let them."

"Listen to me, Nate." She pulled away to cup my face in her hands. I was taller than her, but she gave me a look that made me feel so small. She smiled, her green eyes glittering. My eyes.  "You don't stop living. You make sure the right thing is done. But you don't push others away when they just want to help you."

She patted her pockets, as if looking for something important. "I don't have anything to give you." She grinned, and a loud flurry of sobs ripped from my throat.

"It's time." The deep voice of the chancellor interrupted. I felt my head grow light as hysteria set in. This couldn't be happening. She didn't do anything. It was me, this was my fault.

"No!" I cried, shoving back a guard who tried to grab her arm. "No! You can't take her!"

"Step down, kid." Marcus Kane warned, pushing me back as my mom stepped behind the glass. She gave me one last smile. Mouthing an I love you.

And then she was sucked out into space.

The funny thing was, I didn't scream then. I just let out a meaningless whimper as guards handcuffed me.

"Nathaniel Masteron, you are under arrest for thievery of Ark supplies."

That was when Clarke came out. She caught one glimpse of my face and broke into soundless cries. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry I had too! I'm sorry."

I didn't answer, I just stared ahead into blank space as I was roughly dragged out of sight.

"You know what I want to know?"

"No but I am sure you are going to tell us."

"Why send us down today? After ninety-seven years, what changed?" Jasper asked, Octavia smirked in response.

"Who cares? This morning I was rotting in a cell, now I'm spinning in a forest!" She spun around in feeble attempts to gain Finn's attention. I had to dodge her arm to avoid getting smacked. Jeez, I'm gay for five minutes and she already has a new infatuation.

"Maybe they found something on a satellite." Monty suggested, picking a flower from a nearby bush, and bowing as he tucked it into my hand. I chuckled. "Like an old Weather satellite or something."

"It wasn't a satellite, the Ark is dying."  Clarke cut in, her voice sharp. We all paused our trek, and turned to give her a look. She just kept walking like what she said was normal. "With the current population, they have maybe three months left of oxygen... four now that we're gone."
