"Johnny, Michelle, get ready! You're staying at your grandmother's house for tonight, and then on Halloween.", their Mother called.
"Coming, Mother!", they both replied. Running down the stairs to the outdoors, and jumping into the van. Their grandmother's house is in 2 hours away, and out of town. Their mother couldn't find any babysitters in the area, so the only person she could trust to look after Michelle and Johnny while the Mother and her Husband were doing business for a night, having a break for a day, and working again on Halloween.
"Grandma promised us a story last time, remember Johnny?", Michelle pointed out, remembering from their last visit.
"She did, didn't she!", Johnny also recalled. The two continued to talk about the activities they were planning to do with their grandmother once they got there. Soon they fell asleep on the ride, as the father continued to drive.
2 hours later
"Wake up! Your stop is here kids!", their Mother called, waking up Michelle and Johnny. Slowly waking, and regaining energy, the two grabbed their bags, kissed their parents goodbye and ran into Grandma's house to hug her.
"Bye kids, have fun. Love ya!", the father said, as their mother smiled warmly.
"Bye Ma! Bye Pa! We love you too!", they responded by the side of their grandmother.
"Take good care of them Ma." their Mother called to Grandma.
"I will, Chelsea, go now before you guys are late!", the Grandmother replied with a nice chuckle. Soon after Johnny and Michelle had settled in, they talked a lot about school break, and what they've done so far. It soon got late, and close to their bed time. Their Grandma took it as a great opportunity to tell them the story she promised them the last time.
"Are you guys ready?", their Grandma teased, before she started the story.
"C'mon Grandma! Start already!", Michelle said eagerly.
"Yeah!", Johnny agreed.
"Okay.", their Grandma said with a smug smile.
Once day, in a time far long ago, there was this happy couple. They were the happiest couple you could ever come across. They would tell everything to each other, and they had so much in common. One day on Halloween, their town was celebrating in the town square. There was a big, scary scarecrow in the middle of the entire party. Everybody was having fun... until... Meddling children cut off a few of the ropes that were securing the scarecrow from falling down. There were so many people near the scarecrow, partying and dancing. They all got away just in time.. All except for one person. The happy man's wife. He was so devastated when he witnessed his love's body under the scarecrow, pale, and dead. He was so furious, that he ran away from the party and back to their home. The only thing going through his mind was "If I can't have a happy Halloween... nobody else can.. Later that night he had committed suicide, to join his love in heaven. But committing suicide was a sin, so he had to pay the price. Story has it, that he haunts any children he can find on Halloween night...
"OOOOOH! THAT WAS A GOOD STORY GRANDMA!", Michelle exclaimed.
"Oh, I know that.", their Grandma said so confidently.
"It's not real... Right, Grandma?", Johnny questioned nervously. Grandma smirked.
"Oh, I don't believe it, but who really knows?", Grandma said whilst exiting the bedroom, "Goodnight!".
"Goodnight, Grandma.", they both said. Grandma turned off the lights and closed the door, leaving Michelle and Johnny to their scared thoughts, until they finally fell asleep. The rest of the time they had there was enjoyable. Soon later, their parents picked them up to go back to their house for the night.
On Halloween Day in the afternoon
"We're here Grandma!", Michelle and Johnny said, greeting their Grandmother again.
"Hello dears.", their Grandma said serenely, but in an odd manner. There was something... odd. about Grandma today. They just ignored the feeling and continued to spend the time they had with their Grandmother.
Later, it was starting to get dark. Grandma had gone outside to do a few errands, a small walk away from the house. The forest was silent, and getting darker by the minutes. Johnny and Michelle started playing hide and seek. When it was Johnny's turn to count again, Michelle came across an unfamiliar and eerie door in the house. She'd never seen it there before, out of all the times she's been to Grandma's house. She decided to open it. Inside the door was a scarecrow. It looked entirely like their Grandmother. Michelle looked at it in horror, remembering the story their Grandmother had told them the night before. She ran to Johnny, who was still counting, eyes closed, and took him to the scarecrow. They both stared at it in horror. They then turned on the news.
"An old woman went missing just yesterday.", said the news showing an image of... their Grandmother.
"You don't think...", Johnny said, breaking the silence.
"We should run, before Grandma returns home. Grab a knife, anything for protection.", Michelle said, in a near whisper. So they did. Johnny grabbed a knife, and a flashlight, whilst Michelle grabbed a bat and her phone for a light.
"It could come back any minute, let's go!", Michelle said horrified. They ran out of the door, both turning on their light sources, and ran down the street from which they remembered they were driven through to get to their 'Grandmothers' house. A long walk later, they came across the small convenience store they always saw passing by. It was closed at this hour, so they tried to break in, and find a phone to call for help. They luckily found a phone, and dialed the police's number. Right as it had started ringing, they heard a loud call.
"WHERE ARE YOU KIIIIIDS?...", The voice of their Grandmother yelled, getting closer. Finally, somebody picked up.
"PLEASE! HE-"
The end.
