"Come on Mack, don't be such a pussy." Trinity joked as she and her best friend, Mack, stood on the bank of the pond in the woods near Trinity's house. Mack and Trinity have been best friends since 6th grade. They are nearly inseparable.

Mack sits down on the bank and Trinity follows suit.

"I don't know, Trin, what if somebody sees us?" Mack asked looking at her.

"Whose gonna see us? Nobody ever comes out here. They're all too scared about being mauled by a bear or some shit." Trinity answers.

"And you're not?"

"Nah, if a bear does come to kill us, I can use you as bait." Mack laughs. "Gee thanks. You're something else." Trinity laughs and looks down at the grass. Mack sighs then looks at her. "Alright." Trinity's head snaps up and she meets Mack's gaze. "Really?" Her voice comes out high pitched and she clears her throat.

"Yeah. But you have to promise, don't tell anyone, and I mean anyone, about this, okay?"

Trinity rolls her eyes. "Who would I tell, you're the only person I talk to anyway." She was right. Trinity never had any friends except Mack. She was always an outcast, mostly because people thought she was weird and antisocial because she liked to draw strange pictures of people with blood coming out of their eyes and exploding hearts and she kept to herself. Mack was the opposite. He was outgoing and loved by all. He played varsity football for their high school and he was popular. As a child, his parents were very strict. They pushed him to make excelling grades all the time. Mack liked that he didn't have to try to be perfect around Trinity.

Trinity grew up with an alcoholic father who died of liver failure when she was 12. Trinity's mom struggled with depression after her husband died, so she never paid much attention to her daughter. Trinity was constantly picked on in middle school. They made fun of her out of date clothing and her eye color because she had heterochromia.
[Flashback]

As Trinity was doodling on her notebook during lunch, a group of girls came and snatched the book off of the table. Trinity pleaded for them to give it back, but they ripped it to pieces and called her names like freak and weirdo.

Mack watched from a far as the girls harassed Trinity, and decided to intervene.

When Mack approached the girls, they seized their assault on Trinity and smiled at him.

"Hey Mack" the leader of the group, Natasha, said. Mack frowned. "Don't you have anything better to do than pick on her?" Mack said. Natasha laughed. "Not really, I like to mess with weirdos on my spare time"

she said. Mack looked down at Trinity with pity in his eyes. She had tears staining her face as she held the pieces of her ruined drawing that slipped through her fingers. "Her name is not weirdo, it's Trinity." Mack states. Natasha snorted. "Who cares what her name is. She's a freak. Why are you taking up for her?"

"Because you're being a jerk to her and she hasn't done anything wrong. Just do us all a favor and go away." Natasha's mouth hangs open, as everyone in the cafeteria turn their attention to the commotion.

"Whatever." Natasha scoffs. "Have fun hanging out with your freaky little friend Mack." she spins and walks away as her followers do the same. Mack shakes his head and focuses back on Trinity who is staring at the tiled floor.

"Hey, you okay?" Mack asked, reaching a hand out to help her up.

"I'm fine." Trinity mumbled, slapping his hand away and standing up on her own. Mack huffed out a breath. "I'm sorry about-"

"Look," Trinity interrupted. "I don't need you defending me. I can stand up for myself."

"I'm sorry, I just saw them being mean to, and I thought-"
