Tower of Cards

We were like a tower of cards.

The higher we went,
The easier it was to knock us down.

With each new level,
My smile went wider and brighter.

Soon I was grinning ear to ear.

I protected our tower,
Every way I knew.

But one wrong move,
Sent our tower spiraling down.

One card at a time.

After a while of tears and fighting.

What was left of the tower,
I held precious and dear.

The tower we took so long to build,
Came crashing down.

The cards that held pieces of my heart,
Seemed to mock me.

As they fluttered about.

Everything I had come to know,
Crashed and burned.

All because of you.
