                                                                          Chapter One

The TV clicks off as I search my surroundings for something to do. I'm sitting on the most comfortable spot on the couch trying to make a decision on getting up, or falling asleep. The day has finally come for my mom to leave for her work trip in Korea. She's an architect and a new company needed her job's best (which means my mom is their "best". I could create better things than her and I'm sixteen!). Suddenly I hear a shrill cry from my ten year old sister, Kori. "What was that?!" I yell across the hallway. The was silence for a few minutes but, a small, blonde, head pokes out of her bedroom door.

"Nothing! And you HEARD nothing! Understand?!" She quietly yelled. "Okay?" I said, confused. 'What is going on in there?' I thought as I slowly got up from my comfortable spot. I realized that Kori was still 3/4ths of the way out of her room when I walked toward her. She let out a yelp and squished herself through the opening. I quickly moved for the door as more things crashed to the ground on the inside of the room. Then I see it. A black dog (coyote maybe?) sitting on top of Kori's bed staring at me with big brown eyes, tail wagging. "What is that?" I say a little too calmly. I back away a little while glancing between the two as Kori stands, almost pacing, stuttering while trying to find the right words.

"What did you do this time?!" I almost yell at the top of my lungs. I was out of my mind with rage because I knew I was going to have to take the blame for Kori's stupid action's. Hopefully we could resolve this so I won't have to kill her later. "I-I, um, found Sammy hanging around an alley on my way home from school, an-and I gave him some food.I-I, uh,  guess he thought he could trust me and he kinda followed me home..." she trailed off slowly. I stare at her, bewildered that she would let a dog/coyote follow her home, especially since we have had money problems. Our dad had stopped paying our Child Support. He most likely started over with another family with another two kids. I watch her wringing her wrists as she waits for an answer as if I have it sitting on the tip of my tongue. "Does mom know about this? That you have a dog, a-a, pet in here?!" I yell quietly. She stops her fingers from wriggling to think about her answer. "Uh, uh, no..." she whispers as she looks down at her shoes.

I stare around her pink room with all of her little drawings and posters. I glance at Sammy and he took it the wrong way because he started to head towards me. "Sit," I say with a stern voice. Suddenly, Sammy sits down with his dark brown eyes on me. I think about it for a minute and finally say, "Did you teach him that?' I whisper through my teeth. She stares at Sammy for a few seconds in thought. "No... no I didn't..." she says back. "Then he's a dog. Someone's dog. We can't keep him even if mom says its fine." I say coldly. I wold't want to take care of that thing anyway. I've never been one for pets. Or dogs. "But-" she tries to say. Instead, I cut her off, "No, its not right to keep someone else's dog. Did he have a tag? Or a leash? What street did you find him on?" I say, maybe a little too fast. I haven't let her soak in the fact that she has to give up the dog. She stares around the room for a few seconds. "Fine... I found him on Triwarnell Street. In one of the alley's.

"Okay," I say, considering her sudden submission to my opinion of the problem. "We should take some photos  of him and make some flyers. We can post them up on the street and all around the town if you want," I say calmly. I almost don't want to consider my mom being blinded by cuteness to keep the dog when we can't even feed it. She'd say something like, "Well, we can try to find his owner but, there is the possibility he could have no owner. Then we can keep him!"

That's my mom. Loving and understanding. I'd like her to be a little more thoughtful of us. It's just me, Kori, and mom now. How will we ever sustain a dog when we can't even afford to feed ourselves? My first plan of action is too take pictures of the dog so we could make some flyers. "Don't let the dog-,"  "Sammy," Kori interrupts me. I roll my eyes and finish my sentence. "Don't let Sammy leave your room, okay?" She glares at me and nods her head, letting me know she understands. I quietly leave to go get my mom's camera from her suitcase. She uses it to take pictures of buildings that has a layout that she likes.  I closed the door behind me and let out a yelp as I found my mother, trying to find out what was happening. She made a confused look and said quietly, "What's going on in there?" She tried to inch closer to the door  but I had quickly pushed my arms out across the doorway.

"N-Nothing just us fighting!" I stuttered as I tried to piece a story together. I chose not to tell my mom about the dog. She'd want to keep it if I had. "Why do you guys keep fighting!" She yells throwing her arms up in the air. She looks at me and sighs, quickly bringing her hand up to her forehead to rub her temples. With a distressed look on her face she spoke in a soft tone, "What is it this time." I look around the hallway trying to think of an excuse. I felt like the girl making up an excuse for not doing her homework. "Oh, you know, who gets the smaller room," I say a little bit too quickly. She looks up at me, a little angry and says, " How long have you two been fighting about this?" I lie and whisper, " A week." She stares at me and says flatly, "Well, stop fighting about it," She turns around to walk away and I hear a small " Because your rooms are the same size."
