The hooves of the horses tore through the grassy earth. The ivory white and the dark sapphire blue of the wings of freedom danced in the wind. The cool breeze pushed their hair back. Levi's squad rode as one on their way to the Shinganshina district.
After Eren fixed Wall Maria, humanity was finally safe from any more titans entering the interior. But unfortunately, there were still many titans roaming within the walls. The fixing of the wall filled the hearts of the Scouting Legion with a new hope that maybe humanity can live in peace someday. This new hope resulted in an increase in the speed and effectiveness of their kills. This only brought humanity one step closer to reaching the basement.
Levis squad continued to ride until Maria was visible to them. More men would have come, but Erwin wanted to decrease the possibile amount of casualties. After all that humanity has been through, they could not afford to lose, not now. Erwin knew that the best choice would be to send the Scouting Legion's best squad to uncover the basement's secrets.
Finally, Eren thought to himself. We're finally gonna reach the basement!
After all these years, the possibility seemed almost surreal. Reaching the basement was the very thing that Eren strived for ever since his father put that key in his hand. After all these years, he would finally uncover the truth that will save humanity from the titans' wrath.
Large, sloppy foot steps tore through the ground, coming in their direction. Shocked out of his thoughts, Eren looked behind him. A titan was gaining on them. Before Levi could even give the order to slay it, blood was already spilling out the nape of its neck as it's inhuman eyes rolled back and clumsy body crashed down. The soldier that majesticly slayed the titan at the speed of light stepped onto it's head and revealed herself. Her scarlet scarf flowed in the wind.
As of nothing had happened, Mikasa casually stepped off the titan and got back on her horse. Without a word the squad proceeded with the mission. Other titans came to attack, but Levi's squad took care of them with ease. Everyone got at least three kills. No matter how big the titans were they still kept on going. They still stayed strong. Nice they were finished with each titan, they immediately got back on their horse as if nothing happened.
Eren couldn't help smiling to himself, think how great it was to have Mikasa as a friend. He looked around him at all his comrades and thought that he could have never gotten here without them. He thought of how lucky get was to have them all by his side- except for Jean.
"We're here," Levi said as they approached the gate that led to the Shinganshina district. They looked up at Maria, admiring it's astonishing height. Sometimes it was easy to forget just how tall the exterior wall was.
Opening the gate was not an option. The noise would attract any titans stirring within Shinganshina. An important aspect of this mission was to avoid as many titans as possible. They had no choice but to leave their horses behind. Historia calmed them down to ensure that they wouldn't run away. She eventually caught up with the group once they were about 14 meters up the wall. Only about 46 meters to go. No one knew exactly how long it took them to climb up the wall, but they knew it took awhile. The sun was right above them: it was already noon. In order save time and gas, Hanji had suggested that they try to complete this mission within the day if possible.
Once Levi's squad made it to the top of Maria, they looked out at the beautiful blue sky, which juxtaposed the rotten district below. All of these homes used to belong to people, to families. This place used to be filled with happy people that were now apart of the earth or probably even still inside some titan's stomach out there. The thought of this made Eren nauseous. So much so that he couldn't help vomiting over the side of the wall. A few moments later a horse cries could be heard from below. Connie looked over to see whose horse had suffered at the wrath of Eren's nasty puke.
