Dedicated to Emily Rebecca Thorne
Wattpad name: kimmyjadee"She's so tiny. She's nearly skin and bones, poor little thing." He was almost afraid to touch his own child, she was so delicate and frail. The baby was two months premature, and it was literally a miracle she'd survived the birthing process.
"I'm so sorry, Daniel," Emily said, tears falling down both of her cheeks.
Daniel leaned across his wife and softly kissed her forehead. "Don't be silly, Sweetheart! It wasn't your fault she came early."
Emily shook her head, blinking away the tears. "The doctors wanted me to go on bed rest a month ago. I should have listened."
Daniel rubbed his thumbs on her cheeks. He looked directly into her eyes, and smiled, brightly. "You are not going to go there, Em. We have a baby girl, and she's going to be fine. She's my darling, just like you. And we're a family. Stop worrying. Okay?"
Emily had stopped crying. She was staring at Daniel, and a smile was playing on her lips. "She is lovely, isn't she?"
"She's as precious as her mother. A pearl of great price. I'm proud of her. And of her mother, too." There was no way Emily could doubt Daniel's words, he said them with such sincerity.
"Your parents were here, weren't they?" Emily asked, furrowing her brow as she tried to remember. Some of her recent memories seemed blurred around the edges. She was foggy on the details of the baby's birth, and the days that had passed since. She glanced at Daniel with confusion written on her face.
Daniel nodded. "Yes, dear. They're two very delighted grandparents, believe me." Daniel's grin underlined his statement.
"Who would have guessed that?" Emily said, wonder playing on her pale features. "In fact, with everything that happened in the past, it's just amazing things worked out the way they did. Our families friends. Even close friends. You and I united them when we married for the second time."
"True. We all went through a lot of suffering to get here, that's for sure. A lot of anger and hate and pain. A lot of misunderstandings. But love can wipe away terrible things. So much nastiness has just faded out of our lives."
They both glanced over at their tiny babe, carefully wrapped so only her angelic face showed. She was spending her first days in an incubator, but it was important for her to bond with them -- especially with Emily. The midwife carefully lifted the bundled child and placed her gently on Emily's chest. Daniel stayed close, leaning in to share his warmth with both mother and daughter.
"She looks remarkably like you, Em," he breathed, tears dancing in both of his eyes. "I'm so happy right now. I want to forget every bad moment that ever happened since the day we first met. I want to dwell on every bit of joy we've known together, Emily. I look forward to the day when we can gather our little girl in our arms, and snuggle her between us -- and tell her how our love overcame the evil that happened."
"I want that, too, Daniel." And surprisingly enough, she really did want it. She was done with her path of revenge, and ready to settle down and be happy. And she felt no surprise that these feelings were wrapped up in Daniel, in spite of past mistakes between them. Daniel was right. Their love had been strong enough to dissolve the darkness of hurtful past words and deeds. She was glad to forgive and be forgiven.
"I want to really get to know Nolan and Jack," Daniel added. "And for them to truly know me. I want to be close to the people you love."
"You've always been close to Charlotte," Emily said, stroking their little girl. "Our sister," she added, grinning into his hovering face.
