A Deeper Quest

A young boy woke up, joy in his heart,

“I am filled with a profound and abiding gratitude”

An old man sitting in a rocking chair,

like a flower capable of survival.

With his hands lightly clasped, wise as ever.

“I am grateful for what you said, for being here.

We are in the threshold of a new century,

a new millenium, our dreams, our hopes.

The legacy of us, how will it be remembered?

Anywhere in the world, in other lands?”

The sheer simplicity of what he says

provided for a lifelong euphony, the end result

being the realisation of the ultimate meaning of life.

I have accompanied the old man, we walk

throughout these years of quest, lines blur.

Its courses, consequences, cruelty and compassion,

between light and darkness, defines destiny.

Life, quivering through struggle, inescapable

dark ghettoes, the suffering, the exhaustion.

These failures, judged severely, cast a dark shadow.

The story maps out his journey, unique to picture.

Yet, the young boy carried profound hope,

focused purposely on the rebirth of love, it is my belief.

“Fate is always written about finding, going on.

How can I lose hope in what you said?

We learned, we discovered. We learned from our experiences.

Humanity is capable of that, emotional and striving.

Gratitude is a word that I cherish. Gratitude feared nothing.

And I thank you, to have lived a contented life.”
