Once the deviant was at the station, the leading officers interrogated him and got his confession. By the time the Detective had finished her report on the case, it was well past sunset. I sat at my desk across from her, familiarizing myself with the computer.
"Detective, can I ask you a personal question?"
"Okay, first of all call me Iris, the 'Detective' shit was getting annoying. Second, go ahead, why not."
"Why don't you get the proper amount of sleep? You have bags under your eyes, which according to my database relates to a lack of proper rest."
She took a pause and looked down at her keyboard, fiddling with the space bar.
"That's nothing of your concern."
Looking out the window at the night outside, she gathered her things and got up to leave.
"I'm heading home for the night, tomorrow let's see if we can track down that second deviant." She paused, turning back to me before she left the building.
"Where do you go at night? I mean, you don't sleep, right?"
"I return to Cyberlife when I am not in use. While I do not require sleep, I have a 'rest mode' I can activate to mimic the human sleep cycle."
She look at me with a hint of concern in her eyes, then left for the bus stop with a faint "Night, Cael".
~Iris' perspective~
I swung open the door to my apartment and threw my bag on the ground with a soft thud. My small siamese cat Norbert happily padded over to greet me. I'd found him in the alley behind my complex as a little kitten, and he's lived with me ever since. I reached down to give him a pat on the head, and he purred in happiness. After throwing my work boots off, I laid on my couch, just staring at the ceiling. I really didn't know how to feel about my new artificial partner. He had been useful during the search for the deviant earlier today but, something about him was very off-putting. He seems so distant all the time. Like everything he does is just a statistic in his program. With a sigh I switched on a true crime show and got up, making my way towards my kitchen cabinets. I opened the tallest one and took out a bottle of whiskey. Popping the cap off and falling back against the pillows on the couch, I prepared for yet another sleepless night.
~next morning~
With a groan I rolled over and picked up my phone. Weird, my alarm hasnt gone off yet. My eyes widened as I squinted at the time. I was very, very late.
"SHIT!"
Hustling out the door still putting my work boots on, I was surprised by the self-driving taxi sitting in front of my driveway. I hesitated before jumping in, as calling someone a taxi has been proven to be a popular kidnapping technique.
"Uhm, who called this taxi?"
"CYBERLIFE Android, Model #A1312, Unit #113."
The damn android called me a taxi. Huh, wonders of technology I guess.
"Right, I assume you have a predetermined destination?"
The car whirred, seemingly plotting the route.
"Correct."
With a small shrug I entered the taxi and let it take me to work. Once I arrived at the department I made a beeline for the break room, I was in dire need of caffeine.
"Morning, Iris. You are 2 hours and 34 minutes late. I assume the taxi was pleasant?" Cael was leaning against the wall by the coffee machine. He looked at me with understanding eyes, although it was probably just his programming simulating emotion.
I glared at him, not quite awake.
"Why are you leaning against the wall? You don't get tired, you should have no problem holding up your light ass body."
"It's a mere formality, Detective. I am programmed to appear more human to aid in the efficiency of my job."
I rolled my eyes. Asshole.
Edit: I realised Fox might be a weird name for the things I'm planning in the future, so I've changed our android's name to Cael.
