River

I wasn't really a person that feared things. Consequences? Send them. I do what I want and if whatever I've done deserves consequences then so be it. However being sent to the Devil's Lair has really challenged me in the fear aspect. The rumors haven't helped and right now, the screams didn't either.

Kid was squeezed into my side so close it felt like he was trying to merge us into one body. Ghost didn't seem to mind the screams of pain coming from outside the locked door. Kid however was practically hyperventilating in my arms. "Jesus christ Kid can you breathe?"

Kid nods his head frantically, "barely."

"What do you mean barely?" Ghost growls, suddenly paying attention to his surroundings. It's like he heard kid's voice and came back to life.

"I have really bad anxiety and asthma... so when they both act up I need my inhaler" Kid confesses, his cheeks heating up as he stares down at the floor.

Ghost let's out a sharp curse but I ignore him.

"Where's you're inhaler now?"

"In the nurse's unit." Kid mumbles, looking up at me with his wide eyes.

"We have a nurse?" Ghost asks, looking surprised that such a thing existed in the Devil's Lair.

Kid scowls at him and Ghost raises his hands in surrender.

"I can get it for you." I offer and Kid only stares at me as tears fill his eyes.

"You'd do that?" He sniffs.

I nod my head with an nonchalant shrug.

"I'll go with River... to make sure he doesn't get in any type of trouble." Ghost says suddenly.

Kid smiles widely at the both of us before wheezing as he lets out a happy laugh. "I'm glad I have such good friends."

"Yeah yeah. Leave the door locked I have my key."

I get the directions to the Nurse's unit form Kid before Ghost and I leave the room. Ghost makes sure the door is locked before walking away. I head down the stairs just like Kid instructed but when we reached the ground floor all the lights turned off. I froze in my steps and so did Ghost.

"What do we do now?" I whisper, the air was eerily still and I had a gut feeling something was about to happen.

"We haul ass to get this inhaler and return before  Ares finds us." Ghost turns on a flashlight and we exchange a quick look. Quietly as we could we run, with me leading the way. Ghost provided enough light for me to find my way. I quickly knock on the Nurse's office door but I hear nothing.

"Miss? Hurry I need Kid's inhaler." I beg, keeping my voice low.

The door is ripped open and I was pulled in by the collar of my shirt. Ghost slapped the hand away sharply and walked in by himself. The lights were off but the flashlight illuminated a women in a nurse scrubs.

"Give me that flashlight so I can find it please." Ghost hands over his flashlight with a glare and she quickly goes to a cabinet. She grabs a yellow inhaler and hands Ghost the flashlight back and me the inhaler.

"Tell Kid his new one should be here soon. He only has a couple more uses before he's out." With that We're shoved out of her office and left standing in the hallway alone.

"We gotta go." Ghost this time leads us to the stairs and I quickly follow behind him.

We were so close to the first steps of the stairs, but of course the universe hates me today.

"River!" I hear a voice yell, I look back and so does Ghost. The flashlight shines on a bloody Ares and I immediately knew that it wasn't his blood he was wearing. Smears highlighted his cheeks and the sadistic smirk he wore made my knees shake in absolute terror.

"Ares" I whisper in disbelief, I almost took a step towards him. But Ghost's strong grip on my wrist stoped me dead in my tracks.

"River we have to run."

Without allowing me to think for even a second Ghost is pulling me up the stairs. I hear Ares roar in the dark behind us and I almost shit myself.

"Ghost you better get your hands off of him! He's MINE."

Ghost's hand loosens but he doesn't let go entirely and I was so grateful.

"Talk to me when you're calmed down Ares please!" I call, looking over my shoulder. We've reached the second floor and were now passing my door. The moonlight from the windows lit up the hallway. Ares stood right where the shadows ended. His shirt being lit up but his face staying in the dark.

I give him sad eyes before I was pulled into Kid's room. The door was instantly locked and I heard Ares break something. Please don't hurt yourself. The banging continues and I shove myself against the door.

"River. Don't." Ghost warns.

I toss Kid his inhaler but I don't move away from the door.

"Ares needs to calm down... someone needs to calm him down." I ramble.

"No one can calm him down."

"But he won't hurt me. He said he wouldn't."

Ghost shakes his head, "Are you really going to trust him?"

"Yes."
