Samantha awoke as dawn rays filtered into her bedroom. She rose up on her elbows, unsure how she had gotten back to home. "I must have been dreaming!"

Maybe everything she remembered was a dream after all. She looked over herself and noticed the scratches on her arms. Obviously, she had gone out into the woods yesterday, but had she really seen fairies?

Getting up and looking out the window she could see the river swollen and over flowing its banks. The giant River cane that grew along the shore was flattened with only a few brave stalks still standing upright their green leaves blowing in the wind. Molted earth and silver sky was reflected in the rivers churning waters.

"How did I get home?" Samantha looked down at her arms. They were covered in scratches. The red welts where she had fallen the night before rose from her tiny palms. She examined them turning her hands to the morning light.

Someone had to have found me by the tree. Or was it the fairies. She had read many stories of the Sidhe no where did it ever mention the fairies helping the unsuspecting mortal. She shivered fearful in the knowledge that if they did help her then she owed them a great debt, and barring a debt to them was as good as a death wish.

A noise arose from outside her bedroom door as a creak and groan occurred when Tilly the one house servant shuffled into the room bringing a tray of tea and other danties.

The Missus thought you might like some breakfast. Tilly offered as an explanation as she sat the tray down on the bed beside the girl. What in the world did you get up to last night anyway? Your Aunt and Uncle were fit to be tied last night worrying over you.

Then that Samueal Trotter found you at the edge of the woods lane out like you were asleep or dead like. Near give him a fright seeing you there that way he said. All queer like and him not knowing who you were neither. Oh dear she looked up as the little clock on the mantle chimed. Got to get your Uncles breakfast on the table before he leaves for morn work. See that you finish this here up you have your Aunt in palpitations as not neigh way. Morn to you young in! With a fluff of skirts Tilly took herself out of the room in high dudgeon.

Samantha watched her leave in disbelief she'd never meet anyone like Tilly. So full of life and energy it frankly  came pouring off her in waves. It energized the people around her and made you fell silly for being a bed when there was work that needed doing. Taking a page from Tillys book Samantha started to get out of bed. Only she discovered her feet weren't so agreeable to that decision. She went down with a squelched whoop. Her feet and legs were watery and she slide down to the floor and landed on her rump. Well that wasn't what I had in mind Samantha muttered to herself. With all her strength she pulled her little body back up into the big bed. She managed to worm her way back up to the pillows without knocking her morning tray to the floor. Figuring that she deserved a metal for avoiding another clumsy episode she meekly went about consuming the dainties on her tray.

Tilley had parted the curtains before she left and Samantha stared at the fog frosted windows. It looked a bleak day. Indeed.
