First day of High School. New beginnings, new friends, new…love? Who was I kidding? Nobody would like the idiot who always found herself getting into trouble…right?
My name is Eliza. I’m 17 and I hail from the glorious state of Missouri, however, my family moves a lot due to our…abilities. But I’ll talk about that later.
We just got done moving to San Diego, California. I will say that this place definitely lives up to its reputation with all the tourists, celebrities, and most importantly the big, blue sea.
My first day of high school starts tomorrow so I have one more day of freedom to do whatever I want before I get expelled…again. I decided to explore the neighborhood for a bit out of pure boredom and out of habit. I had expected this new area to not have as many secluded spots as it did. It almost seemed too good to be true. I also didn’t think that it would be as quiet as it was because of the city it’s in.
I will admit though, I’m definitely not complaining about how nice the park is and how badly I’m going to destroy it later, just as long as it rains…
Once I get back from exploring the quiet neighborhood, I see a random group of teenagers in front of the new house already. Then, I notice a head of blonde and white hair talking to them. The hair belonged to my 16-year-old sister, Alyssa. This always happened when we moved into a new city. As I walk past the group, heading towards the garage, I notice 2 pairs of eyes contemplating me. One belonging to a tall, red headed, tan guy with emerald green eyes that looked to be around my age. The other belonging to an average heighted, blonde girl, with sky blue eyes that looked to be a year older than me. Both sending shivers down my spine as I walked away from them.
Little did I know that I would be running into both of them again very soon…
“Mom, Dad! I’m home…oh wait that’s right they’re both out for job interviews today. I completely forgot.” I walked into my bedroom, on the main floor, and shut the door. I stood in front of my mirror staring at myself. I had short blue hair, it was naturally blonde but I dyed it, crystal blue eyes, and pale skin. I got most of my looks from my dad’s side of the family, but I got my height from my mom’s side.
Now, back to the whole ability thing. Everyone in my family was born with some kind of ability. I have the ability to control lightning, my sister can control the weather with her emotions, my dad has inhumane speed, and my mom can turn into anyone and anything she wants to. I have the strongest and most destructive ability because I can’t control it most of the time. I’m the reason why we move so much.
Lightning arcs between my fingers just thinking about all the trouble I’ve gotten myself into over the last 5 years. Sighing, I grab my phone and headphones out of my pocket and stick them in my ears. Blasting music in my ears helps me out with distracting myself and it’s a way for me to escape my life.
I don’t know how long it had been since I fell asleep listening to music. All I knew was that the sun was setting when my mom said my name, which was enough for me to wake up from the nightmare I had. I don’t remember any of it though...
I rub one of my eyes and take my headphones out before greeting her. “Hey mom. How’d the interview go?” “It went well sweetie. I start next week. Your dad got his job too. I came over here to get you because he just came home with take-out and I know how hungry you must be.” “Wow. It’s been a while since we’ve done take-out.” I stick my phone in my pocket and get off my bed, walking out of my new room right behind my mom.
I sit in the seat next to my sister and grabbed a box of lo mien, starting to devour it as soon as I got it. I have a fast metabolism due to my ability, meaning that I have to eat more food and eat more consistently than other people my age. I can’t skip meals like other people can and sometimes I wish I could.
