“You mean to tell me, your life is a video game because you broke a damn vase?” Carter exclaims as the two teens walk to school. The previous night, the two stayed up until the early hours of the morning discussing their current lives until they fell asleep. Carter told Haruhi absolutely everything, from her father to what his bosses son did to her on their day together. Haruhi listened and hugged and cried with her long lost sister and once calmed, Haruhi had explained her life.
Now that they are awake from their few hours of sleep-after dropping Ella off at her first year of elementary school- they make their way to school where at the gate, Carter is instantly noticed. Though, she stands out with her pink, holey sweater, black leggings, and scuffed up flats. Not to mention her long, curly brown hair, glasses, and curvy figure that accentuated her foreign nationality. But anyone noticing that was just curious, the glares were all customers that enjoyed Haruhi’s company during Host Club.
“So, try to stay behind me when we show up to the music room, Tamaki can be a little touchy feely and I know male contact makes you shut down,” Haruhi says, grabbing Carters hand comfortingly, making the girl shiver in discomfort, “My father didn’t help with that either,” She mutters and Haruhi smiles, “We’ll get you fully safe soon, don’t worry.”
“Wow, you look poor,” two voices say at the same time on either side of Carters from behind, making the girl scream in fright and jump behind Haruhi, “YOU TWO CAN’T DO THAT TO EVERYONE YOU SEE, YOU IDIOTS!” Haruhi screams, bonking the twins on their heads before turning to Carter and grabbing her shaking hands.
“I thought I would last at least until the first period,” Carter tries to laugh off, but her quaking voice gives her away. “You’ll be fine, now come on, we have to get to class and then we’ll spend lunch introducing you to the host club,”Classes were easy with very few meetings, just the occasional customer asking who Carter was and Haruhi introducing her as her best friend. But now, here they are, making their way to the music room for lunch. “Deep breath in, they’re creepy to new people that are actually sane,” Haruhi warns and Carter nods, grabbing onto her friends bag strap for self security.
“Welcome Har-I don’t believe we’ve been introdu-” Tamaki begins to flirt, but when he reaches for Carters hand, Haruhi slaps it away, putting the most offended expression of despair on the boys face. “DADDY! DAUGHTER HIT ME!” Tamaki exclaims and Carter turns her head in confusion.
“So they know you’re a girl, but make you pretend to be a boy so you can host?” Carter mumbles and most of the club gasps while the doors are slammed shut, resulting in Carter jumping. “And why does she know this, Haruhi?” Kyoya asks and Carter grips the bag strap harder, the closed room starting to make her nervous. “Childhood best friend, she just got back last night,” Haruhi states, knowing Kyoya knows most of it. “After eight years, too. So I assume she knows of the debt?”
“Yeah, you could easily pay for the vase yourselves and it wouldn’t even dent your accounts, but you chose to manipulate someone who didn’t have the money to argue,” Carter snapped and instantly shrunk down at the glare Kyoya sent. “Haruhi, I don’t even have a lunch. I’m just going to go to the front office and call the elementary school to check on Ell-”
“You can have some cake with me!” Hani yells, dashing forward, but frowning with tears in his eyes when Carter flinches away. “That’s sweet, and thank you, but I don’t have any money,” Carter says, shaking it off and smiling at the childlike boy. “Alright guys, no more fast movements at Carter,” Haruhi growls and the males all tilt their heads in confusion. Except for Mori who takes a few steps forward.
Carter stares with wide eyes at the man, shrinking down and looking up as he gets closer. “Use mine,” He says and holds a cell phone out to Carter, making the girl stare in shock while hesitantly accepting the cellular device. Honey looks between the new girl and his cousin a few times before grinning brightly, “And don’t worry, the cake can be a welcome to Ouran present! No charge!”
With that, Carter watches as the small, yet, older boy carefully grabs her hand in his and walks her towards a single table in the back. “See how slow and gentle that was?” Haruhi asks the first and second years who nod, “Be like that,” She growls.
They all then go to watch Hani and Mori interact with Carter, mainly gaping at how Mori tries to feed Carter while she waits for the elementary school to pick up the call. “Yes, hello. This is Carter Mills, I was calling to check in on Ella Mills,”
Carters expression quickly morphs to worry as the person on the other line fills her in. “Um, thank you, I’ll be there in a few minutes. Just tell her I’m on my way and leave her alone unless her breathing messes up,” Carter says and hangs up, placing the phone on the table next to Mori.
“Haruhi, I guess I’ll see you whenever you get home. Ella had an allergic reaction to something and broke down. She doesn’t want anyone near her and keeps calling for me,” Carter says, grabbing her bag and Tamaki blocks the door, “Why didn’t the school call your parents?”
Carter’s expression darkens in seconds. They may be sisters, but Ella created a mother bear in Carter, and mother bear is a force to be reckoned with. “My mother died eight years ago, Ella’s mom abandoned her on my doorstep the day she was born with nothing but a blanket and even if we knew our father phone number, using it would cause nothing but trouble. Now get out of my way.”
Tamaki nearly goes up in flames from the glare and shuffles away and Carter leaves, running out and to the elementary school. “Was she limping?” The twins ask and Haruhi groans, plopping on a couch and crossing her arms, “Go ahead, Kyoya. Give the rundown,”
“Carter Mills. 16, her mother died the same day and way as Haruhi’s. Her father has a police file, but no evidence in it. Last year she said she got jumped by a gang when she went into the hospital for a broken knee, fractured wrist, concussion, and dislocated shoulder as well as multiple lacerations. Has asthma, ehlers-dols syndrome, and low blood sugar. Her sister, Ella Mills, no listed mother, 4, had her tonsils removed last year after they exploded. Both are allergic to blueberries, tomatoes, bananas, benadryl, and latex.”
“Well the latex allergy explains why Ella had a reaction at school,” Haruhi mutters while Hani’s expression is dark along with Mori’s, “Let’s go get Carter and Ella and bring them back to have some lunch,” Hani states and he and Mori stalk out, leaving in a limo that arrives back within minutes.
While the twins torture Tamaki, Kyoya stands at the window with Haruhi to watch as the third years escort Carter out of the car, Mori holding her bag while she holds Ella. “She wasn’t really jumped, was she?” Kyoya asks and Haruhi looks up into his eyes, “We both know the answer to that, it doesn’t need to be said,”
