Headcanon that Joey was actually physically sick for quite a while before the closing of the studio, but he self-medicated with some sort of satanic ritual to keep himself mobile, energetic, and relatively healthy. It was a pretty expensive ritual, though, so after he lost the studio as a source of income, he could no longer afford it. It was one reason he was so desperate to keep the studio afloat, since it was literally all that was keeping out of the physical state he was in in 1964.
