The sound of creaking wood echoed in my ears.
My eyes fluttered open but all I could see was a dark wooden ceiling with moss growing in some places. A hint of light glinted at the corner of my eye and I turned to see a closed window with the sunlight seeping through the cracks. I sat up from my bed and stood up with my dress falling down to knees. I walked over to the window and gently pulled the shutters open.
The sun was blinding. I squinted as a raised my hand to my eyes, blocking out the painful rays of light. It took me a moment to adjust to the brightness and in an instant the beautiful landscape of a red field filled my view.
It was beautiful. A rich field of crimson red poppies. I knew I've never seen anything like this before but at the same time, everything seemed so familiar. But every time I try to remember a fuzzy pain suddenly jolts across my skull.
The sudden sound of wood being chopped pulled me out of my daze. I looked down towards the source and saw a tall and rather burly man. He had his back to me as he swung his ax down on another piece of log, splitting it in two.
When the man stood straight, he stretched his back and ran his arm across his forehead.
It was so strange. The man seemed familiar too. I know I have never met this man ever in my life and yet he gave off an odd feeling of intimacy and safety. He must have noticed that someone was watching him because he looked up and turned to me. But before my brain could register his face a sudden static pain engulfed my senses and then black.
My eyes opened once again but instead of seeing a mossy ceiling, I saw the stained headliner of my brother's car. I felt the engine gently vibrating across the metal body and trees whizzed by in a blur as I looked out the window.
"Where are we?" I asked. He took a quick glance at me and smiled. "We're at least 30 minutes away from our destination." he said and my eyes grew wide. "What? How long have I been asleep?" I turned to him as I rubbed my hands on my head. I can still feel the headache pulsing inside my skull.
"Around 9 hours." he replied with a shrug. "I tried to wake you up when I stopped at a 7-Eleven but I couldn't. I thought you were having another 'dream' so I just left you alone.".
"Did you get water?" I asked and he nodded, pointing at a green eco-bag in the backseat. I rummaged through the bag and pulled out a 250mL bottle of water and straightened up my seat to a sitting position. I twisted the water cap open and quickly downed the entire bottle. I wiped the trail of water trickling down the side of my mouth before sighing in relief as the pain subtly went away.
"So, was it one of your 'dreams'?" my brother asked as I threw the bottle at the back. "I-I'm not sure..." I replied as I leaned back. "I saw a red field and... there was a man there... I woke up before I could see his face."
My brother furrowed his brows as his thumb lightly tapped on the wheel. His eyes went to me, "Was that it? Nothing... you know... weird?"
I shook my head and he sighed.
"Well, all your other dreams pointed us to this place," he bit his lip "We'll try to use dad's selenite when we get there. Maybe you just need to boost your antenna.".
I nodded before turning my attention outside. The road we were driving on was lined with tall and lush trees. The sun was setting and eerie shadows had already begun to reclaim the forest. I felt a chill run up my spine as the feeling of being watched suddenly dominated my senses but, then again, I shouldn't be surprised if it was true.
My eyes caught a big wooden sign with the words "Welcome to Gravity Falls" painted on it before it disappeared from my sights.
This town is known to be the ultimate hub for the weird and supernatural so some creepy stalker is the least of our problems, especially with my brother around. I looked at him and his eyes were glued to the road. A pang of guilt hit me in my chest and I turned to the window again. I fiddled with the chain bracelet that hung on my wrist and the little charm that was latched onto it.
It's not my fault.

My brother got out of the car and went inside the small building. I also stepped out and stretched by back as I waited for him by the car. I looked up at the old neon sign that shone brightly in the night despite its unkempt state. "Cozy Cabin Motel" I read under my breath. "Cute."
I heard the soft chimes from the door and turned to face my brother as he walked over to me with our room key bouncing in his hand. "We're in room 5," he smiled "-my lucky number.".
I rolled my eyes as I stepped towards the boot of the car. My brother unlocked the latch from the front and I got our things. My brother carried the rest and we both headed off to our shared room.
We placed our stuff by the wall I immediately jumped on the bed closest to the window as my brother closed and locked the door. "I call this bed." I declared and he scoffed. "Whatever, if a vampire ever gets inside you'll be the first one he eats.".
"I'm okay with it as long as he's cute." I responded while kicking my shoes off and snuggling into the pillows. My brother huffed and shook his head. He took out his wallet and counted the bills. "We still have some cash leftover for food. You wanna get dinner?".
I shook my head and hugged the pillow tighter. "I'm not really that hungry yet. You can go without me." I said and he nodded. "Alright, I'll be back in an hour or two." He said as he walked outside with the room key swirling in his finger before locking the door.
I turned to my stomach as I heard him walking away and sighed. I sat up and walked over to our pile of bags and grabbed my [color] backpack. I dragged it next to my bed and fished around the front pocket. I eventually pulled out a cluster of clear crystals trapped inside a plastic transparent sphere with dried carnations mixed in. I turned off the lights and lifted the ball to the light of the moon. It glimmered playfully under the lunar light as a streak of rainbow appeared on the walls. Perfect. I smiled.
I climbed back to bed and lied perfectly still with my stomach facing upwards. The ball filled with selenite and carnations rested between my palms as I stared the bright array of color refracted onto the ceiling. It didn't take long for my eyes to become heavy. I let out a yawn before my lids closed for the night and the colors began to dance within my mind.
