Tamaki awoke to the loud ring of his phone. Almost immediately, he accepted the call, not even bothering to check the caller ID. Mariko had been in hospital for the past five days with not sign of waking.
“Tamaki, you need to get here. Something’s up,” Kyoya’s voice came through the speaker.
********
Kyoya stared through the window into Mariko’s room, watching as the doctors tried to restrain her to the bed. She was in a coma, but her body reacted to all the doctors and nurses, refusing their help. She would scream and shout, thrash and kick, to get the doctors away from her. Nobody knew how she could do that. She was still in her coma.
Tamaki arrived in no time, dressed in jeans and a top that he obviously threw on. His hair wasn’t even brushed and styled. He stood next to Kyoya, looking into the window.
“What are they doing to her?” he asked, confusion in his tone.
“She refuses to let anyone near her. They are trying to check her vitals, but she won’t let them near her.”
“Can I see her?”
Kyoya shrugged. “I guess so. Those doctors aren’t getting anywhere.”
The doctors were shooed from the room and the two teenagers walked in. Immediately, Tamaki rushed to his sister’s side, while Kyoya just stood next to the door. Tamaki’s hand itched to hold his sister’s, but he didn’t. He didn’t want to know what Mariko’s reaction was to him.
“Take her hand. She knows you. Her reaction must be different,” Kyoya told him, curious to know about her reactions to different people. He hadn’t tried it yet. He was dreading it for he was the one that put her in this state. The others didn’t know that and that was how he planned for it to stay.
Tamaki took a deep breath and inched his fingers towards his sister’s small hand. It looked so fragile, she looked so fragile. The blond wrapped his fingers around Mariko’s. His eyes watched her face, watching for any signs of discomfort, watching to see if she would scream or thrash. She didn’t. She just laid perfectly still and calm.
“Interesting. I’m going to go tell this to the doctors,” Kyoya muttered, turning to leave the room, but was stopped by Tamaki.
“What about you? How does she react to you?”
Kyoya shrugged. “I haven’t tried yet. I should go inform the doctors about Mariko’s reactions to you. I’ll see her reaction to me later.”
Tamaki nodded and let his eyes drop back down to his sister. Her face was pale and her eyes were closed lightly. The room was filled with the steady beating of her heartbeat.
********
Kyoya sighed and leaned against the wall. He had told the doctors about Mariko’s reaction to Tamaki and since then, he was avoiding going back to her hospital room. Tamaki had texted him about five minutes ago, telling him that he had to go home. Now, he was outside Mariko’s room, contemplating going inside.
Giving up on arguing with himself, he pushed the door open and stepped inside. He lifted his eyes to find a certain red head sitting next to the small body of Mariko Souh with her hand in his.
“What are you doing here?” he asked, his eyes turning to slits at the twin.
