On Sunday night, James and I leave our common room hand in hand to start our weekly patrols. We also patrolled yesterday, and it was pretty uneventful, except for us catching some couples snogging in random places around the castle.
Our job is to just walk the halls and peer into classrooms to make sure nothing out of the ordinary is happening. "Where should we start?" "We could start in the dungeons and make our way up." James offers and I agree.
We walk by the potions classroom and say a quick hello to Professor Slughorn. He tries to invite us in for some of his favorite crystallized pineapple, but we have to decline his offer. As we walk by the Slytherin common room, James mutters, "I wish I could go in there and hex all of them." "James!" I punch him lightly on the arm. "You're head boy! You can't say things like that!" "Come on... It would be fun!" He whines. "No. We can't do that. Besides, you don't even know the password." I shake my head at him.
"Actually I do. Padfoot and I were sneaking around here and we heard a Slytherin say it. The password is ambition. Stupid password if you ask me." "I roll my eyes. "Potter, stop." I say warningly. "Aw, we're back on last names? All right Evans." James smirks at me, awaiting an annoyed reaction from me. I don't give him one. "I thought since we were dating we would be allowed to call each other by first names, but I guess I was wrong." He says, glancing at me sideways. I can't help myself from grinning at his idiocy. "Shut it." I say, not really meaning it.
We walk up to the ground floor, and pass the entrance hall and the great hall. Nothing out of the ordinary so far. On the first floor, we pass by the Transfiguration office and wave to McGonagall. We do a quick walk around the halls. Nothing there either.
We arrive at the second floor and as we pass the Library, I gaze longingly through the window at the shelves of books. "Do you want to go in?" James says, walking up behind me and putting a hand on my shoulder. "We can't. It's locked." I shake the doorknob. James just grins. "Are you a witch or not?" He pulls out his wand but I push it away. "But we're not allowed. It's against the rules." "That's never stopped me. Alohomora." The lock on the door clicks and he pushes it open. "But we have to be quick." I say, thinking of how much trouble we could get in.
We walk in and it's so quiet. I mean, it's always quiet because of Madam Pince, but now it's completely silent. And slightly eerie. Suddenly, a boiling pot of water falls right where I was standing a moment before. I hear a loud cackle and James yells, "Peeves! Leave us alone!" "Students in the library! Students in the libraryyyyyyyy." He calls out dragging out the word library. I force myself not to laugh and grab James' hand. "Come on, we should go." We are about to walk up the stairs to the third floor when we hear a loud shriek. James looks around alertly. "Who's there?" I sigh. "It's only Moaning Myrtle. We should go." The next part I whisper so she doesn't hear. "She's a real pain." James takes my hand again and we walk up the stairs.
We do a quick loop around the third floor and find nothing strange and we walk to the fourth floor and pass Trophy Room. A loud crash comes from inside and James pushes the door open as he mutters, "Probably Peeves again." He walks to the left side, while I walk to the right. Ugh there's two people snogging. I wonder who? I take a silent step closer and freeze. Severus and... me? I stand there for a moment, my eyes raised as the two don't seem to notice or care that I'm there. Probably the former. James walks up behind me, and after he sees what I'm staring at, he loudly says, "What the fuck is going on here?!"
Severus and the... the imposter of me break apart and stare at us in shock. "You were really so desperate to be with Lily that you got someone to impose as her?!" James says, and in spite of the situation laughs loudly. Severus flushes with anger while the imposter flushes with... embarrassment? The two of them stare at us for another moment and I say, "Will someone tell me what on earth is happening here?" Severus looks uncomfortable. "Well, I thought that was Lily. And wait which is the real Lily?" He looks between me and the other girl. I roll my eyes in annoyance. "You really have to think about it? I'm obviously the real one because I'd never kiss you." "Good one." James says smugly and gives me a high five. Severus flushes even more and stares daggers at James.
"She's lying." The imposter says, speaking for the first time. "I'm obviously the real one because I'd never date James." James snorts. "That doesn't even make sense because we've been dating for a while." I nod and the girl retreats back to the wall, as if she's trying to hide from us.
Just then, the girls starts changing back. "Polyjuice potion. Perfect timing." I murmur, trying to figure out who this is.
A very pretty girl, who I think is a Slytherin, appears. "Helena Erikson?" James says, appalled. "You know her?" I raise my eyebrows at him. "I'll explain later." James mutters under his breath. "Why would you settle for Snivellus? And why are you trying to be Lily?" James asks, beyond confused. The three of us turn to the girl Helena and she takes a deep breath. "Well, if you must know, it was a dare." Helena says as I fight the urge to laugh. "Well, that's a... cruel dare." I say as Severus continues to glare at James like it's his fault. "So i'll just go now." Helena says, pushing past us without looking back. Her footsteps echo across the room as she walks down the hallway and down the stairs.
"Well that was odd." James says, running his hands through his hair. "Will you stop doing that?" Severus growls, a mean glint in his eyes. I suddenly have a flashback to when Severus and I used to talk about how much we hated that James did that. I'm sure Severus is thinking the same thing and I look away. "Well, I'd better go." Severus says and makes to walk away but James puts a hand out to block him. "Not quite yet." "You let her go." Severus mutters as I look at James in question. "Yeah well... ok, 10 points from Slytherin." "What?! But you let her go!" Severus yells angrily. "But she was here on a dare so I can't really penalize her for that." James says, with a slightly evil grin. I shake my head but stay out of it. "So?" Severus sneers. "Well you're just lucky I didn't take more points. Or give you detention. Actually I should do that." Severus shakes his head wildly, his greasy hair smacking his face. "Ok, well I'll be nice and won't give detention" "You nice?" Severus mutters. James smirks at him. "You better watch your attitude." "Don't tell me what to do." James loops his arm around my waist. "Get your hands off her." Severus says irritably. "No." I say, smiling at James and wrapping my arm around him. We walk out of the room and I don't have to look back to know that Severus is scowling at us murderously.
As soon as we get outside, James walks me to the window that looks into the trophy room and presses me against it. My breath catches as he kisses me. Severus storms out of the room and stomps off towards the other direction. "What was that for?" I ask after he pulls away, well after Severus left. "Well, I like making Snivellus mad. Also I like snogging you." My face reddens as I grin and I say, "Ok, we should keep going with patrols." "Why?" James smirks. "Because that's what we're here to do." I whisper, my face getting redder. He kisses me one more time and says, "All right. Let's go."
We patrol the rest of the floors, and besides one couple in the astronomy tower that James had to shout at to get out, nothing else strange happened.
Once we arrive back at the Head's common room, I ask James, "Wait, how did you know that Helen girl?" "Helena." He sighs. "Well, during the summer before fifth year, her and her parents came to stay at our house. Our parents are friends. And the whole time she would like flirt with me, and I-" He ruffles his hair. "I flirted back a little, but it wasn't a major thing or anything. And then on the last night that they were staying, she kissed me. And I have to add that she's a really bad kisser." He smiles weakly, awaiting my reaction. I burst out laughing and James looks at me confused. "That girl seems like a weirdo." James chuckles lightly. "Well I'm off to bed now. You coming?" "In a little. I want to finish my chapter." I say, holding up my muggle novel. "Ok. Goodnight." He kisses the top of my head and walks up to my room.
Two hours later, I finish my book and crawl into my bed next to James.
A/N Hey guys! I hope you enjoyed this chapter! It was pretty short, and I had no motivation at all this weekend. I'll try to post again tomorrow!
