No one expected the zombies. Well not no one, the crazies yelled their victory to the world as they squirreled away to their Apocalypse hideouts with their 20 years worth of canned food.
The main theory is that someone created them, it was illogical to think that they just came to be, especially with their resemblance to the media versions. The creatures were the same horrifying undead creatures that humankind had been making movies and writing about since the idea first came up.
There was little knowledge of how the spread happened since it seemed to occur everywhere at once. One day you just woke up to pandemonium, watching people get torn apart and eaten became a daily occurrence for the survivors.
Eventually people congregated in small pockets of inhabitable land; the Vongola fortress was one of these places.

"Do we really have to patrol, Sempai?" Skull wheedled as they piled into the helicopter. He didn't know why they all had to go together, isn't that just making them more of a target?
"Skull, you are a Cloud I don't want to hear your bitching about the patrolling, and yes we need to patrol. Do you want a hoard to go noticed neat the fort? Want the people who go searching for food to be ripped to shreds?" Skull winced, yea he had a point.
"Just get shut up, you two!" Lal yelled over the sound of the helicopter blades starting to spin. Skull shut his mouth and pouted, Lal was mean~
They flew over most of the surroundings, finding the normal cluster of zombies splattered about, but no hoards around.
"Wait! It looks like there are some people there, kora!" Colonello yelled as he spotted a splash of colour on an apartment rooftop. They looked over and sure enough there was two petrified children on the roof, they were huddled around each other and seemed to be crying.
"It doesn't look like we can land there, kora." Colonello steered the helicopter towards the roof and gestured to Lal to grab the rope ladder.
"Wait right there little soldier boy, why should we risk out lives for some random civilians?" Reborn said annoyed.
"Agreed, I vote against this idea. It's risky anyway, the chance that we succeed without any casualties is only 72%." Verde piped up.
"Well I believe that we should save them." Fon said, looking to Skull, "You?" There was a moment where Skull stood with a deer-in-headlights expression before he answers sheepishly.
"Um, save them I guess. I would hate to let leave anyone to that fate." Reborn stands and glares.
"If you wish to save them so badly, you can be the one to pass them up to us. You are the stuntman afterall, you're used to doing shit like this stupidity." Skull froze but before he could say anything, Verde spoke up.
"The highest probability of success occurs when Reborn is the spotter for Skull, do you accept?" Reborn rolls his eyes.
"Well someone has to keep the idiot from falling face-first into the zombies. Knowing his luck he'd take the kids with him." Skull's face scrunched up and annoyance flared.
"Hey! I'm not that bad, Asshole!" Reborn smiled at Skull mockingly and gestured at the ladder, Skull paled.
"Fine, let's get this over with."

The retrieval went well up till the point where the frankly pathetic barrier crashed and broke. All eyes turned to the emergency exit door that was now filled with at least twenty zombies all crowding and clawing each other.
