"Prince Maurice?" A deep, gruff voice asked. "Are you ready?"

'Nonononononono!' I thought, not responding. That was a bad idea.

"Prince Maurice!" This time, I needed to respond.

"Almost, Geoffrey! Just give me a sec!" I held my breath when Geoffrey didn't answer, hoping with all my heart he bought it.

"Alright." Came the reply. I let out my breath and continued to pack what little I needed.

A few minutes later, I closed my back and hopped out of my window. It was still early in the morning so it wasn't very light. I fell I to the shrubbery and carefully ran I to the woods and out of sight of the castle.

As soon as I was far enough, I slowed to a walk and made my way to the peir. Then, surrounded by people who knew me and would know something was up, I realized that this was a bad idea... But, I had come prepared!

In one fluid motion, I pulled out a cloak that covered me entirely and put it on. Now no one would suspect that their 8-year-old Prince was running away.

-----------------------------------

My breath came in shallow gasps as I -stupedly- looked overboard into the churning, green, never ending deep water. As I stared into the mass of H2O, I started to feel nauseas and I quickly threw myself away, trying and failing to block the painful memories flooding my brain.

'"Maurice! Slow down!" Father said.

"No!" I yelled, enjoying the thrill of the chase. I closed my eyes and listened to the birds singing. But something was off...

"MAURICE!!! LOOK OUT!" My eyes shot open and immediately I was surrounded by a cold, wet, darkness. Water.

"FATHER!" I screamed, as soon as my head broke the surface.

"MAURICE! I'M COMING!" A loud splash followed my father's words, right before I fell under the water again.

All of a sudden, I felt strong arms grab me from behind. They lifted me up and out of the water where I gasped for air, craning my neck to look at my savior. It was my father, he was the one who had saved me! "Maurice, I-" he was cut off as he saw something that looked like the edge of the world. My father's face paled faster than I could run. He looked around frantically, trying to find something.

He found it and whispered, "Maurice, please, grab onto that tree when I throw you. I'll always love you, your siblings, and Aleena. Never forget that. Now GO!" He threw me and I just managed to grab the tree branch, but I wasn't strong enough. I slipped and fell, pain exploding in my head as I hit a rock. Then, my world turned to darkness and the next thing I knew, I was on a small, sandy beach with Father next to me.

"Maurice..." He whispered, noticing I was awake. "I won't make it. But I know you will. Once you're strong enough, run and get help. Run as fast as you can and don't look back! NEVER STOP RUNNING!!!" Then, he had a coughing fit, but recovered and started talking again. "I know you never wanted to be king. You always wanted to be something more. Go. Follow your dreams and be the hero you wished to be! You can do great things with your speed and pure heart. I believe in you, Sonic the Hedgehog.

"Papa?" I asked, "Thank you. For everything. Daddy, I lov-" I was cut off when I noticed that my father wasn't breathing. Fighting tears, I grabbed his hand, feeling the warmth slowly drain. I couldn't take it anymore and chocked out the words, "I love you, Dad!" Before the tears flowed like a water fall and I ran. I ran till I got to the castle. Never looking back.'

That was two years ago, I've never stopped running, and here I am.

Broken out if my thoughts by a sudden lurch, I realized that we had landed! I stepped off the boat with a sigh of relief and started to explore this new terrain. Then, I heard terrified screams and merciless, cruel laughter. I ran to the sound and saw a fat human man with a big mustache and TONS of robots.

I knew that this man was up to no good so I curled up and used my new move -the spindash- and destroyed his robot fleet.

The man looked at me in shock and fled the scene in his flying thing that look suspiciously like an egg.

I smiled and turned around to see the Mobians I had saved and a few news reporters. They started cheering for me and thanking me. After a while of this, a news reporter made her way up to me and said, "Thank you for saving us! We owe you are lives! I have a question if you don't mind. What's your name?"

I thought about her question for a second before I remembered my dad's last words. "It's Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog!"

"Thank you again, Sonic, for saving us!" The woman said again, before disappearing into the crowd of cheering fans.

At that moment, as they cheered forme,
I became something I never thought I could be. I became someone with a gift and a heart of gold.

I became a hero!

But most of all, I became...

Sonic the Hedgehog.
