~Flashback~

I'm sitting at the dinner table in our home, with my family crowded around me. "Happy birthday Y/N! Do you feel older now you're seven?" My eleven year old brother asks me.

"Not yet! But I will tomorrow!" I say happily, smiling hugely. "Well, I have a present for you", he says, and as I look around excitedly he exchanges a sad look with our parents, "Where is it?" I ask expectantly, and his smile is back in place, "I'll get it", he says and walks out of the room.

"Our present goes with Ryan's", my parents say, "Daddy will go and get it, and you can have it after Ryan gives you his", my mother says, and I nod excitedly, bouncing up and down on my chair.

Ryan and my father both re-enter the room, and if I had been old enough I would have noticed the tearful expression on my dads face and the broken-hearted look they all share, but my attention was fixed on the two packages in their hands.

Ryan hands me the long, slender parcel he holds in his hands and I jump up to hug him before ripping the paper open. A high pitched squeal escapes me "Now I can be like uncle Mitchell was before he went away!" I say excitedly, holding up a small but beautifully crafted bow.

"Not without this you can't", my dad says and hands me his gift, I hug him and mum too before I opening the bundle, a quiver stuffed with arrows is their gift, and I jump up and down with excitement, running around and hugging all my family tightly.

"Don't cry, mummy!" I say brightly, "I won't hurt myself, and look how pretty my presents are!". She nods, wordlessly hugging me tightly and burying her face in my hair, weeping silently; dad and Ryan join the hug, tears in their eyes too at the sight of a little girl so excited to be receiving a weapon for her seventh birthday.

A child getting weapons for her birthday, that's what the Flare does to the world.

~Present Time~

I take in a shuddering breath as I wake up, the vision wasn't as terrifying as the one of the Grievers, but it was horrible in its own twisted way. "Y/N?!" I recognise Minho's voice, "What's wrong, love? Why are you crying?" That was Newt.

I open my eyes and realise that tears are streaming down my cheeks, I open my mouth to tell them about the vision, but my throat and mouth are dry. Minho passes me a glass of water, and I gulp it down, wiping the tears off my face as I describe the scene I had witnessed.

The two boys sit down beside me and put their arms around me, "I'm sorry Y/N" Minho says, and Newt wordlessly tightens his arms around me, I gasp in pain at the movement, and instantly he slackens his hold, "Oh bloody hell! Sorry love!"

"Ok you two, get out of here, she needs to rest", Clint says, walking over from where he was sorting his and Jeffs supplies, and signals for the boys to leave. They stand up and give me one last hug each before leaving, then Clint gestures for me to lie down.

"What happened?" I ask "You fell through the Homestead roof", he says absently as he checks me over and I roll my eyes, "I can tell genius, but what's wrong with me?"

He glances up from his work, "You have a klunk load of scratches and bruises, a sprained wrist and a few cracked ribs; and while we're on the topic, take your shirt off because I need to make sure they're healing correctly".

I do as he says, and I stay in the Med-jack hut for another hour while he checks me over with the help of Jeff who reappeared from wherever he had disappeared off to. Once they're happy that they've treated all my cuts and bruises and wrapped my ribs and my wrist they let me go with instructions not to do too much hard work.

I walk to the Mess Hall and head to the Runner's table. Even though I'm not a Runner, I usually sit with them. Before I even get halfway across the room a shout goes up from the group and Newt runs to me, seeing him at the Runner's table reminds me that he's finished his trial.

"Y/N! How are you feeling?" he asks as he puts his arm around me to help me walk, I don't really need it, but it takes some of the strain off my injured ribs. "I'm feeling pretty terrible, to be honest, shuckface", I say, and he laughs, pulling out a bench for me and sitting down beside me.

I look to find Minho and see him moving to sit on my other side, "How was the runner trial?" I ask, directing my question at both of them, "Pretty good" Newt says, "I enjoyed Running, but I don't think I'll ever memorise the Maze".

So you are planning on being a permanent Runner?" I ask, saddened at the thought of not seeing him as much as I would when he was a Track-hoe.

He nods, "Yeah, I plan to" and Minho speaks up, "He's a great Runner, he's fast and strong and learns quickly so he'll remember the Maze after a few runs, there's room for improvement of course, but I'll help with that".

I nod, "Well, I guess we'll have to make the most of breakfast and dinnertimes to talk then", I say with forced cheer, "I'm going to get some food, and I need to talk to Gally". I stand up and move away, and they let me go, knowing I'll need time to process this.

I grab a plate of mashed potatoes and sausages and walk to the Builder's table, "Hey Gally", I announce myself, and he looks up "Hey Y/N, do you want to talk?" I nod, and he stands, "Let's go outside then".

When we're far enough from the mess hall not to be overheard Gally turns to me, guilt written plain on his face, "I am so shucking sorry Y/N. If I had known that the roof was unstable I never would have told you to go there".

I stop his protests with a hug, and he freezes, not sure what to do with this display of affection after so long of my avoiding him, but hesitantly he hugs me back.

"Clint says you're the one that brought me to the Med-jack hut, and that you were crying about it being your fault".

"Well it was-" he starts to say, but I cut him off.

"It wasn't your fault, Gally, you didn't know the roof was unstable, and I should have known better than to stand up on a damaged part of the roof".

"But I-"

"Listen to me, Gally, It. Was. Not. Your. Fault. Ok? I'm the one that should be apologising, not just for yelling at you on the roof, but for holding onto a grudge this long, sure you hurt me, but I've been hurting you for weeks now, and I didn't even notice!

That's not ok on my part, you tried to apologise and fix what you did wrong, but I completely cut you off and refused to forgive you, but that changes now. I forgive you for hurting me at the bonfire and I want my brother back in my life, please forgive me?". My voice catches on the word 'brother', my mind going back to the vision I had while I was unconscious.

I had walked away from him as I talked, pacing around the grass, but now he steps close to me and wraps me in a warm hug, "Of course I forgive you, you're the only sister I have and I love you like one".

I hug him back and stand in his embrace for a while, then I feel the pangs of hunger gnawing my stomach and remember my dinner, I give him one last squeeze and let go, stepping away and grabbing my plate off the table where I had put it down.

"I don't know about you, but I need to eat", I say, and he laughs. "I've already eaten, but you can come sit at the Builder's table if you want". I nod, and we walk back to the table where he sits down and I sit next to him, smiling and talking to the boys who greet me.

I might not be as close to them as the Runners, but they are still my family and I love them all; besides, if Newt is joining the Runners, then I won't see either of my best friends very much, and I'll need other friends, and these boys are definitely that.
