While I was fixing my shoes I got the text from Luke announcing he was close.
The plan was simple: He was supposed to pick me up, then Alyssa, Jake and Lissa (who are waiting at Lissa’s place), arrive the party, survive and then the way back. Easy piesy.
I was ready and waiting for Luke in the living room. I rather stay waiting than people getting in my house and starting to make questions. Like where are my parents.
I tried my best to look decent without that much effort because the work wasn’t welcome in that moment of my life. Wearing a kind of baggy white dress with a thin brown belt, my tights and jacket kept me away from the cold.
By the bzzzzzzzzt made by the intercom, I guessed Luke arrived.
“We right there,” I said to the speaker next to the door and gave me a last glance in the mirror, checking my makeup and hair.
Let’s roll.
-------
We were silent. Luke driving and me in the passenger sit but I could still feel his nervousness.
“Are you okay?” I finally said, the only thing said after the first “hi”, and stated the obvious. “You seem nervous.”
“What? Um- Me? No,” Luke said, quickly, trying to cover it with a smile that was closer to a grimace than anything. “I’m fine.”
I didn’t even know the kid that much and I knew he wasn’t fine.
“Hey, you don’t have to be nervous” I tried, looking at him. “I’ll be with you if you want.”
That actually was a bit more for me than for him. I already knew enough about Luke to figure he wasn’t any party animal. He was nervous because of the party, for fuck’s sake. Keeping close to quite people was my way to stay away from any crazy shit.
“No, really, I’m fine,” His eyes flicked to me before going back to the road. “You don’t have to babysit me.”
Before I could say anything else, he added. “We are almost at the others place.”
Ten minutes later we had Alyssa, Jake and Lissa struggling to fit in the back of Luke’s Honda Civic. This is gonna be fun when we come back.
Right now we had five persons in the car but at the end of the night that number will be down to two, most likely. Girls leave with other boys, boys stay or leave with drunken friends… Only Luke and I were certain that we’ll comeback at the end of the day.
I gave Luke a last slightly worried look before looking out the window.
-------
The party was as full as I expected. Drunk teens getting even more drunk in the kitchen, drunks dancing on the living room and more drunks most likely fucking upstairs. Pretty cliché, if you ask me.
I pretty much hated every kid in the room. I don’t want to sound bitchy but they were a big ball of preppy kids playing to be adults. Sweating. Gross.
“Do you want something to drink?” I asked over the already loud music, turning to look at Luke, who seemed like he was taking everything that was happening to make his next move.
“Um, sure, I guess,” He said, looking pretty hesitating about it, making me pull up an eyebrow.
“Well, be right back, don’t get lost”
Making my way through the people wasn’t easy but my height helped me. I actually didn’t drink that much because I couldn’t control my attitude while drunk, so the few times I got out of hand I simply passed with the excuse of being a “mean drunk” and that’s all. Fortunately, my body required an especially big amount of alcohol to actually get past tipsy.
