I want to tell you a story
Of a woman so gentle as gentle could be
Who one night after a weary day
Desired to lay beside her love
This love she had never spent a night with.

He stretched his arm for her to lay upon
Which she did without question
But my God! The arm was so thin
She felt she would break it soon

His skin gave a thin coating to his bones
One would see the whiteness of the bones beneath it
He was tall, taller than she
But she felt she lay beside a baby.

She wouldn't cuddle him, no
For she felt she was hugging bones
My friends, bones.
No, she wasn't mean

She pulled away kindly and stared into darkness
She felt pity for one who lay beside her
Not the love, no
But the man, not being well learned
Thought to himself she had felt the deepest love for him.
