These images are from the protests I attended today and on Monday, June 1st. Our organizer is very dedicated to keeping things peaceful.
We started out with two packs of water bottles, bread, and bologna, but the community has really pulled together. As of today, we still had around 10 unopened cases of water bottles, and the restaurants nearby have been sending donations of hot food. Churches have brought by water, snacks, and several other things.
People have donated pizzas, medical supplies, speakers, and so much more. One of the city officials helped us get a permit to put up an awning in a very short amount of time, and even the police officers have been handing out waters and Gatorade. We have a table set up for food and drinks, and we're very welcoming to everyone that passes by.
Our organizer re-establishes several times throughout the day that we are there to protest peacefully, and that any violent or foul language or actions are not tolerated. We've had to ask people to leave a few times because we feared that things would escalate, but so far they haven't.
Today we had an area set aside for people to make signs and join in, as well as a local artist to assist. It's a child friendly demonstration, and we've kept in good spirits by singing and dancing on the sidewalk. We stay out of the road, we march in an organized line, and we chant nonviolently.
Our city is small, and our turnout isn't as grand as the larger states' protests, but we've remained in good standing with passersby and the law enforcement. We believe we're changing our community's perspective on protestors, and we see people in their cars showing tons of support as they pass.
We were overjoyed to hear that the police responsible for the death of George Floyd have been charged, but we know that our fight is not yet over. We will continue to gather, and I will continue to amplify the voices of my brothers and sisters in these troubling times.
Everyone, stay safe and stay smart. I'm rooting for y'all, and I'm sending my support and energy to all the protestors fighting for justice.Love from Arkansas,
Omegami
