~Y/N's POV~
The deafening boom of the closed Doors echoes around the concrete corridors of the Maze, and the finality of the noise is terrifying. I stand in front of the huge Doors, slowly processing what just happened, and hesitantly I reach out and touch one hand to the cold, unyielding stone.
"I'm sorry", Newt says, his voice breaking the suffocating silence that lingers once the echoes fade away.
"Don't worry about that now", I say "We have to focus on surviving the night".
I look him over quickly, "You're not hurt?"
"No, it was just Minho".
"You'll have to tell me what happened later, if you ever get the chance".
He stares at me, "Well that's a happy thought".
I frown, "Just being honest here, now let's get moving, I don't think we should stay at the Doors for long".
We set off in a run, keeping our pace steady and our footsteps as silent as possible; then I hear the noise.
It's a constant whirring, accompanied by the same shringing sound made when Winston sharpens his knives, then a series of unearthly clicks join in, sounding like long fingernails tapping against glass. A hollow, rattling moan filled the air, and then something that sounds like chains dragging on the ground.
The hair on the back of my neck stands on end as the chilling sounds grow louder, and I know the Griever -that's all it could be- is getting closer. "Run" Newt whispers, "Follow me, and stay close".
He darts back the way we came, and I follow, running right behind him. My quiver bounces on my back, my bow clenched tightly in my hand, the leather grip slick with sweat.
The awful sounds pursue us, echoing and re-echoing off the high stone walls until they reverberate through me, chilling me to the core. The familiar overwhelming panic that filled me that night in the woods begins to well up inside me, threatening to break free; and I start to lose control.
"Newt!" I whisper hoarsely, and he turns to me, seeing the fragmented look in my eyes. "Newt, I'm going to black out, I'm going to go unconscious, keep running!" I manage to gasp as I fall to my knees, clutching my hands over my head in an effort to block out the noises.
He shakes his head stubbornly, "No, I'm not leaving you" he whispers, pulling my arm over his shoulder and helping me to stumble along.
"Please Newt; please just get away. I'm slowing you down, leave me and run" I cry, a tear slipping down my cheek as I slowly lose my grip on reality, the overwhelming terror filling my mind and blocking out any thought but one:
"Please don't die and let it be my fault",
He looks down at me and sees the desperation in my eyes, "Ok, but I'm going to find you a hiding spot".
We limp down corridor after corridor until finally, he sees a place. Lowering me to the ground, he pushes me into a gap beneath the wall, covering me with vines and ivy.
"I'll come back for you, I promise", he says, squeezing my hand once before he stands, looking around and continuing to run, leading the Grievers away from me.
"Thank you..." I whisper, the words barely audible, even to myself, and I let myself get pulled into the vast sea of nothingness.
~Flashback~
Ryan is crouching next to me in the forest, teaching me how to shoot; the target is a patch of burnt bark on the tree twenty meters away. "Come on Sis, I know you can do it", he says, not touching me and letting me concentrate, "Remember what I told you".
