"Ivy!" My little sister Leah yells. "Get up! We have school!" I open my eyes and look at my clock. "Leah. It's 3:00pm." She shakes me again. "Yes it's time to get up!" I pull myself up and look at her. "Just kidding! It's Saturday! But we have a new neighbor!" She smiles and shakes me one more time. "I swear to god Leah. I could seriously kill you. And who is she?" She shakes her head. "It's a boy!" I shrug. "So?" She sighs. "So he's around your age and he is pretty cute!" I sigh. "Oh hush. Leave me alone and let me sleep!" I say pushing her out. I push her out and then settle in for a good reading. I pull out a book and grab my glasses and start reading. I hear my door open beside me. I don't look away as my book gets better. "Leah. I suggest you leave now before I kill you in .5 seconds." I say as I keep reading. "This is my sister, Ivy. She loves to read." What? I look away to see a boy standing next to my little sister. I hurry and take my glasses off and feel my hair. It's in an awful bun. He smiles. He is beautiful. He has shaggy blonde hair and brown eyes. "I'm Ivy." I say quickly. "Michael. Well, I better get out of here before she kills me as well as you in .5 seconds." He smiles. Leah laughs and they walk out. What just happened? I fall back on my bed and cover my face. Why am I so awkward? I finally get up and look at myself in the mirror. Oh my god. I feel sorry for that boy. He saw me like this? He probably got scared. I put my hair down and brush it out slowly. I pull out my straightener and start straightening my long hair. It goes down to my hips. I put my liquid foundation, two powder foundations and then mascara. I have to put a lot of makeup on cause I'm ugly. The make up helps a little bit. The mascara brings out my blue eyes. I walk out and get an outfit. I'm feeling skinny jeans, a band shirt, flannel and black vans. I walk out of my room to find Michael sitting on my couch next to Leah. He looks up and smiles. "Wow! You have another sister?" He says smiling. I smile back and stick my tongue out at him. "I'm just kidding. I can tell whose beautiful face that is any day." I feel he burning in my cheeks. I look away and walk into the kitchen. "So how long have you guys lived here?" I hear him ask Leah. "We've been here a week! She still doesn't have friends. She doesn't like people." I hear Leah whisper. I grab an apple and walk back into the living room. "Have you heard the stories of this house?" I smile at Leah and she shutters. "Stop it, Ivy!" She yells. I laugh. He shakes his head. "Don't be mean to her. And yes I have heard the stories." I'm shocked. I bite into my delicious apple. He smiles at me. I hear footsteps come in from the front door. My stepmother walks in. "Who is this? Ivy I told you not to invite boys over!" I put my finger up to stop her but she slaps it down. "No, I'm sorry, what's your name?" She turns to Michael. "My name is Michael. I just moved in next door, and it wasn't Ivy who invited me. It was Leah." She looks surprised. "Well, Ivy should've been the responsible one to tell her to not do that!" She walks away and sighs. "It was nice to meet you, Michael. I'm Laurie Hanes." I roll my eyes at the thought of her having my last name. Michael stands up and smiles and walks toward the door. "Bye nice meeting all of you. Goodbye beautiful, Ivy." He says and smirks them leaves. My cheeks burn again. "Ivy! Get your ass in here now!" I roll my eyes and look at Leah. She whispers sorry then walks up stairs. I walk into the kitchen and brace myself for a bit. "Why the hell are you just now getting up?" I shrug. She walks over to me and puts her hands on my face. "You look at me when I talk to you, bitch." She says. She let's go and walks over to the stove. "Make dinner, you worthless piece of shit!" I sigh as she walks out. Leah walks in and she has tears. "It's fine Leah. I'm fine. You're fine." I hug her tight. I pull away and smile. "What do you want for dinner?" I ask while smiling. "Pizza!" I shake my head. "No, you're mother wouldn't be happy about that. How about mashed potatoes, green beans, and ham?" She sighs and shakes her head yes and walks out. I turn around and walk to the sink to wash dishes. I wash then I feel a slight pinch on the tip of my finger. "Ouch!" I yell. I pull my finger up and see blood. What the hell? I look through the sink and find a knife. I stare at it. I stare at the shininess of it and how it would feel if it would slice my arm? I need to feel something, right? I take a look around and see nobody coming. I put the knife in my pocket and continue to wash. I finish the dishes and start dinner. The evil witch of the east walks in as I'm about to go to the bathroom. "Where are you going bitch?" I sigh. "To the bathroom." She laughs. "Go ahead skank." I walk out and go to the bathroom. I close the door and lock it. I sit down on the toilet and pull out the kitchen knife. I stare at it again. The blade is cold and slightly damp from where I washed it. I dry it with my shirt. I roll up my flannel then I slowly out the blade on the skin of my wrist, push down, and slide. It stings, but feels good. I watch as the blood slowly goes down my arm. Is this what it feels like every time? My nerves are high and I'm shaking. It doesn't hurt that much. I needed to feel something. I heard people say on TV that it helps them feel alive. Is this true? Because I feel very much alive right now. I feel it stinging. It is starting to hurt more now. I cut one last time and get up. I wash the blade and cover my arm up with a huge bandaid and pull my flannel down. Hopefully it won't bleed through. I can't believe I just did that.

I make it back to the kitchen and there's the evil witch of the west sitting there looking at the food cooking on the stove. " what the fuck is this shit?" She asks. "Food." I reply. I go to stir the mashed potatoes but I feel the hair being ripped from my scalp. She pulls me down to the ground and starts kicking. "What the fuck. I don't even like green beans. You little fuck." She screams in my face. She kicks one last time and I swear I hear my rib pop. I can't breathe. "I can't believe you father wanted to keep you." She yells and she storms out. Leah runs in and is crying and tries to help me. "It's okay, I'm okay." I can barley say as I get up. Oh god. She did break my rib. I check the time and it's 5 minutes until my dad gets home. Hopefully she will beat me and he will come in and find it. That'll never happen. She's too good. The freaking bitch. I hurry and finish the food and set the table. I hear her coming. I brace myself for a hit or something, but nothing comes. "Oh wow, sweetheart! You made the table! You're such a beautiful and wonderful young lady." She says and then I see my dad walk through the door. I run to him and hug him tight. "I missed you so much." He hugs back and it hurts. My broken rib hurts so bad. I let go and hold my stomach. He walks in the kitchen. "What's wrong with your stomach? Hurt yourself?" I glance at Laurie and she has a isweartogodyousayanything face. "Stomach ache." I say quickly and call Leah in for dinner. This is my life. Getting beat from my step mom and my dad not knowing it. I wish my mom was still here. Everything was okay when she was alive.
