They Bite

Chapter 16- Testing Day

About a week passed before it was our testing day.

Not that I didn’t believe the girl that warned me. I believed every word she said, she looked much older than me so that might be why. I decided not to tell Laurel until I knew Niki agreed with me, Laurel had been here longer and we didn’t know her opinions about the place. I hadn’t seen the girl again, I looked for her everywhere. Laurel or Zoe don’t talk about what happens after the testing day. So we just know about what happens before, we reinforce the walls with the other people they find over the week. There were 10 others, 13 including us, but that number was expected to half. 6 of us showed evidence of powers, manipulating stuff with their mind accidentally, we didn’t look into it though, and we can’t until our testing day. They scared us with a story that if you know what your power is before your testing day you can’t pass the test, but I think its BS. The only thing is, Niki didn’t show evidence of powers. I can’t think about it though. We have been best friends since kindergarten we have always had each other’s back. Losing her would be like losing a limb. She is worse than me. Every day I tell her it will be ok, but I’m slowly starting to lie to myself and her, every day its more. Leaving seems like our only option, but ever since they saw us that night they have this place locked up tight. We still know as little about this place that we did at the start of the week. We now know why Laurel showed us The Cage, they haven’t let us anywhere near it since we started working on the walls with the others that they found this week. The 10 others are; Ryan, Felix, Claudia, Jack, Shaylee, Ami, Ashton, Lucy, Natalie and Aaron. Willow and I have shown Powers and so have Ryan, Felix, Claudia and Ashton. We all know only what they have told us, not much, except Niki and me. Everyone else just knows that we will be tested and about the powers, that’s it. After they nearly caught us near The Cage Niki and I were taken out of Laurel’s dorm and put into a separate room, in another block. I guess they thought they could show us if they wanted and took us out before we could see anything we couldn’t. Or so they thought. That was about the time they found Claudia. Then everyone else came in one after another. We got to know each other a little but after that most people just keep to themselves or their small group that they came with. Except Ryan and Felix. They are brothers, you can tell by just looking at them. They both have Black hair, cut short, and the same nose. One day they decided it was boring sticking to themselves so they went around the groups trying to find someone friendly enough to talk to them, those someone’s were us. Felix is the same age as Niki and I and Ryan is 9, two years younger than us. Even though there is an age gap they get along like good friends and Ryan isn’t just Felix’s Younger Brother, he is his own person in the group.

On our testing day they had us lined up, blindfolded somewhere in The Cage. Probably underneath the walls just about to go in. We must have been in some kind of soundproof room because we couldn’t hear anything except each other and the guard, pacing around the room. There were giant butterflies in my stomach, I felt like I was going to be sick, and my hands were shaking. But nothing compared to the nerves of the people that didn’t show powers, I felt Niki shaking even more than me, in front of me in the line and I heard some people actually being sick. After what seemed like forever standing in that room they took someone out. I heard them whimper as they dragged her out, it was Ami. She didn’t show a power. We stood there until they took out another person, I knew she was most likely dead, she didn’t show a power. They kept taking people out until Niki was next. I felt tears burning in my eyes, the lump in my throat made it impossible for me to talk so I just hugged her until it was her turn to go out.

“Break it up girls,” The Guard said harshly,

We both actually started crying then. The last time this happened seemed like years ago, in the service station, before we even made it to the house. The guard then ripped her from me and dragged her out to The Cage.

It was the longest 5 minutes of my life.

Wondering whether my best friend was still alive.

My blindfold was soaked in tears by the time the guard grabbed my arm and took me out of the room.

As he was walking me through hallways I calmed myself down a little trying to focus on my fight and not on Niki.

He took my blindfold off in a wooden room it took me a little while to adjust to the new lighting. As soon as I did he opened a rickety door in front of me and pushed me into The Cage.

I looked around The Cage, it wasn’t what I expected. The half that I was going was built like an arena. With chairs raised around the centre, where I was, there were light posts used as support poles around the very outside of the cage. Then I spotted the Corpse I had to kill. It looked like it had been a young girl, not much older than me. I stood my ground as it walked towards me. My fear grew as it grew closer and nothing happened. When it was about 5 metres away from me it reached its arms out towards me trying to close the space between us in less time.

It got closer. With every step it took the smell got worse and my fear grew.

What if they were wrong? What if I don’t have a power? My fear spiked, my heart beating hard, adrenaline pumping through my body. It stepped closer, and closer, and closer until its hands were no more than 30 cm away and something snapped inside me.

I screamed, planted my hands on the sides of her head, I felt a strange sensation in the tips of my fingers and the corpse dropped down dead.

I looked around and everyone in the crowd was either looking at me in a weird way or off into the distance somewhere I saw someone point towards what everyone was looking at. I followed their hand and saw they were pointing at one of the light posts. Except it was lit.

Then I passed out.

I don't have that much time to write this.

Sorry if the first part dosnt make much sense i was in a rush to finish it for you guys before i go on holidays. for those who didnt read what i posted about an hour ago to my profile i am going on holidays for a week i will be back next wednesday (hopefully) and idk if i will have wifi but ill be spending time with my family so i wont have time to update anyway. Merry christamas and a happy new year until next time
