because Kuren lived close to the center of the city, it took relatively no time to get to where the action was, some protesters having even set up an actual bonfire.
I smiled to myself, walking up to a group and making quick introductions.
I couldnt spot any police from where I was, which seemed a bit odd, but chaos reigned everywhere.
a little further up the street, some people had brought out a fucking guillotine, dancing around it like a scene straight out of 'the purge'.
I approached a building, having split away from the other protesters to skirt around the perimiter, checking for any weak points in the chain link fence.
the police department looked to be mostly deserted, windows boarded up and little light shining from within.
noticing a discrepancy in the barbed wire, I took that opportunity to scale the fence, hauling myself over the edge to land quietly on the other side.
little bursts of pain shot up from my injured ankle, but I pressed ahead, ignoring the discomfort.
my eyes darted around anxiously, the dark shadows around me seeming to shift and morph with my movements.
I approached the brick wall, unzipping my bag to pull out several cans of spray paint.
then I got to work.
after around 15 minutes I stepped back and dusted my hands off, admiring my own handiwork.
'breonna taylor mattered' ballooned across the otherwise drab wall in large lettering, with other smaller messages decorating the untouched edges.
'I hope it takes you bastards a long time to clean this off.' I muttered, turning around and slinging my bag back over my shoulder.
having hopped back over the fence, I froze anxiously.
something was off.
among the bushes that lined the perimiter of the fence, I crouched and listened intensely.
before there had been a plethora of noises, created by the crowds of rioters causing a general scene from where they were gathered.
but the sounds had been largely replaced by the shuffling of boots and the authoritative shouts of what could have been police officers.
my eyes widened slightly and I made to step out of the cover the bushes offered.
quickly, a hand covered my mouth as I was pulled back by someone.
I instinctively reached up to pry their hand away, but a cool voice broke the silence.
'I need you to be very, very quiet. the cops just carried out a large scale ambush and arrested most of the protesters that were still out.'
the voice was undeniably female, albeit quite low and soothing. her raspy tone calmed my nerves and I twisted to look at my company.
my mouth dropped for the second time in 24 hours, as I beheld Athena in her full riot gear, an instant blush rising to my cheeks.
I racked my brain for something to say, anything to make her fall instantly in love with me.
in a brief lapse of judgement, I blurted out the first words that came to mind.
'do you, by any chance, listen to girl in red?'
